Welp. Honestly I don’t know what to say about this one other than:
1. Takashe Miike is a crazy person.
2. This is my favorite musical of the 21st century.
Much like the majority of Takashe Miike’s career, the kaleidoscopic Happiness of the Katakuris overwhelms my audio and visual senses to the max with delirious, over the top insanity in its truest and most original form.
This genre bending existential family drama defies conventions with bursts of comedy, karaoke, horror, dead bodies, emotionion, dancing zombies, claymation, erupting volcanos, family dinners, wonderful lighting, and blissful melodies—all reaffirming the family dynamic and stacked with absurd setpieces that are amongst the best I’ve ever seen. I could wonder into this over the top acid trip, batshit insane, beautifully colored, extremely sensitive, feel evoking world any second of any day.
Always a pleasant revisit, even better with friends, hope you dug it Michele and Tony! <3
