Despite what some people might say about this film, it's actually not that bad. Pretty much everyone is hilarious, especially Sam Rockwell as Zaphod Beeblebrox and Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent, proving he was destined to be a Hobbit from the start. Then of course you've got the fact that this movie is absolutely insane, you can't really describe it without simply saying that it is insane. And funny.
And dolphins really can sing...

Where do I begin? Maybe Marvin the depressed robot? Maybe the bureaucratic Vogons? Maybe the whale which comes to existence miles above the planet's surface? Maybe the dolphins, the second most intelligent species on planet Earth (and guess who's not the most intelligent species ;) ? Maybe the number 42, the answer to life, the universe, and everything?
Seriously, this movie is just so full of sarcastic, absurd and intelligent humor, it really makes me sad that it took me so long to finally watch it because of most of the reviews in which "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is unfortunately described as an average sci-fi movie (which is absolutely unjustified in my opinion).
Well, now I'm really addicted to Douglas Adams' sci-fi series and the first thing I did after I watched this movie was to order all of Adams' books on Amazon :D
I guess this really militates for the quality of this movie. -
A quirky British comedy that didn't get its due at the box office or with the critics. You really have to like Douglas Adams' stuff though, despite this being a far cry from what makes him great. It just doesn't have the bite that's Adam's writing contains.

The gap between my wanting to enjoy this movie and my actual enjoyment is very very wide.
I will admit now that I still have not read the book, something I have been chastised for as far back as high school. Too many parts felt shoehorned in because they in the book, not because they did anything for the narrative of the film (ala Harry Potter movies). This movie is far to weird for general audiences and I felt it skimmed to quickly what I'm sure is great humor and satire in the books.
Sometimes a movie can inspire you to read the book because you want to build on your film experience. Here I think I want to finally read the book so I can forget it.

Probably my favourite film that I don't own.

Mediocre. Read the book, it's far more colourful and such a playground for your mind.

I've seen some strange films, but I'm pretty certain this one takes the cake.

That was the weirdest film I've ever seen.

Kon ik deze maar 42 sterren geven....

In a word: it suuuuuuuuuuucked. In three words: it really, really suuuuuuuuuucked.
I honestly think I enjoyed Catwoman more than I enjoyed this movie, and that's really saying something. It was boring, pointless, and just plain unfunny - which, for those keeping score, is not good for a "comedy." Now my brother is a big fan of the book, and he hated the flick too, so I would imagine it is not representative of the book's quality. Still, they must have really changed everything, because there was not a laugh to be found in the movie, nor anything resembling a plot that anyone would care about.
What a waste of a great cast - not to mention 100 minutes of my time. -

Misses the point of several jokes, but still funny

I remember loving this when it first came out, and then having to endure eight years of people talking about how terrible it was, as if it was some sort of landmark for bad book-to-film adaptations. I'm pretty sure this is a case of Douglas Adams fans being too precious with their source material because rewatching it now while Hitchhiker's Guide may be the definition of a 'messy' film, in parts it's a lot of fun. Okay, so maybe I was helped along by the fact that I love Martin Freeman, Zooey Deschanel, Mos Def AND Sam Rockwell, so perhaps I just liked watching them mess around for 100 minutes, but I genuinely think this is a really entertaining and…
