Pretty good 80's slasher. I'm having a hard time putting words together on how I feel about it.

Apparently, I thought I'd watched this before, but maybe I'd only watched the first half of it, as I didn't remember the weird stuff that happened in the last twenty minutes of the movie. This is a very entertaining 80's slasher with some decent kills and as mentioned, an unexpected last twenty minutes.
A group of sorority sisters plans to throw a party to celebrate graduation, but their house mother, who apparently has a terminal illness, freaks out about the party and plans to kick them out early. When they try to prank the house mother, it goes horribly wrong, and the girls start disappearing one by one. Despite being somewhat dated (particularly the admittedly awesome-but-80's-tastic power pop band at the party), this is a fairly effective slasher flick that is much better than the average flick of the period. Definitely recommended.

After a prank on their grouchy house mother goes terribly awry the sisters at the Theta Pi sorority are getting offed one by one at their graduation party by someone who knows of their dirty deed.
Expertly crafted slasher film from Mark Rosman who directs a tense, well-scripted, and suspenseful slasher. Richard Band's score is both beautiful and haunting and the actresses all exude real jealousy, contempt, and depth which is normally lost in the one-dimensional characters normally found in the slasher genre. With a set-up that actually works and a pay-off that actually satisfies, The House on Sorority Row is one of the best slasher films the genre has to offer.

Burdened as it was by a memorable poster that made it seem more like a softcore rape drama than the offbeat slasher mystery that it really is, The House On Sorority Row is seldom mentioned in the same breath as other classic 80s bodycount films, which is a shame, since it is definitely one of that sub-genres more enjoyable efforts.
Featuring a mostly female cast, it keeps its character mostly sympathetic and manages to sustain its mystery long enough to keep things consistently interesting. Bonus points have to be given for extremely effective use of a highly disturbing clown costume and an open-ended conclusion that leaves you wanting to see more.

Despite a dopey plot twist and mostly lame kills throughout, The House on Sorority Row is an effective slasher. The group of girls we follow aren't typical teens, but a bunch of accidental murderers whose varying degrees of guilt distinguish them as the film goes on. Eileen Davidson is especially good as their selfish ringleader.

If I've learned anything from this type of film, it's that when you and your friends accidentally kill someone, you should notify the authorities. Don't try to cover it up. Just confess. I mean it was an accident.

Grossly unoriginal storytelling with massively crappy practical effects but there are one or two scenes which lift this above being a complete waste of time.
What struck me as odd is the outstanding score from Richard Band which reminded me a little of John Williams' Raiders score. More than just a little out of place in a mediocre Slasher movie.
Shame really, as the miserable old bitch House Mother at the beginning is scarier than the antagonist. The clown room is a little freaky if you're a total wimp and hate clowns, but beyond that, The House On Sorority Row is very low on atmosphere and scares.

The remake is better, at least in the remake, not all the white girls are completely dumb.
-
A slasher with an intelligent, well thought out plotline, which isn't as typical as some of the others you come across. Well made and acted, definitely worth seeing

Looks pretty sleazy from the poster but if you give it a chance you'll find a great mystery/slasher hybrid.
