The Informers
2008 Directed by Gregor Jordan
Synopsis
Greed is good. Sex is easy. Youth is forever.
A multi-strand narrative set in early 1980's Los Angeles, that deftly balances a vast array of characters who represent both the top of the heap and the bottom. Connecting the intertwining strands are a group of beautiful, blonde young men and women who sleep all day and party all night, doing drugs and one another with abandon, never realising that they are dancing on the edge of a volcano.

I am not sure what Bret Easton Ellis was trying to create in this 2008 film adaptation of his short stories. But, I have a hunch. He is trying to relive his success with adaptations involving the excessive 1980s (Less Than Zero, American Psycho) and wholly unlikable characters (Rules of Attraction) but it simply does. not. work. here. The Informers adaptation comes off as recycled, misplaced nostalgia at the hands of washed-up desperation trying to ring out his creative rag of the last drops to thirsty fans. Please, can we move on now?
There is a huge disconnect in many aspects. A disconnect between the poorly-written characters. A disconnect between the story-lines. Which results in a disconnect between the audience…

Amber Heard joked on Top Gear last year that the only reason to see this movie was her frequent nudity. Sadly, she's not wrong - this was a TERRIBLE movie! Vacant, cold and entirely superficial, and while it's just half the length of Short Cuts - a central inspiration for director Gregor Jordan - it felt like twice the length of Altman's masterpiece. A glacial bore of a film.

I'm being generous by giving this one star and that star is solely because Billy Bob Thorton and Kim Basinger were great and kept me watching. Other than those two, everything else is terrible from the acting to the story to the characters...just pure garbage.

I don't mind nudity. At all. However, there seems to exist a natural law stating that it has to be directly proportional to the amounts of poor acting and slobby direction. This, at least, is certainly true here, and let's just say: people get naked a lot. On a personal note, it made me sad to see Brad Renfro - good as always but looking spent and impish - in his last role.

If I could take only one thing from this movie it was a film about Amber Heard running around nekkid and have sex with everyone, which I guess gets her in the end. Similar to Less The Zero, the same author gives us another story of wasted youth. Without much real purpose, this film was a bore and a waste unless you love Amber Heard, then this movie was awesome!!!..

This is a really nice looking poster.
There's this fat guy, he's such a bad actor that it's unbelievable.

Amber Heard makes the first 30-40 minutes of the movie bearable, but then she pretty much disappears, as does any reason to keep watching.

Oh man, such a LET DOWN. I bought this movie a long time ago and finally watched it. Flat out fact: Amber Heard is one of the hottest females ever, and shes very much naked in this film. The rest of the film...a mess. All these story-lines going on and most don't even wrap up and/or have anything to do with the plot. Entertaining mess. Like Chris Issak and his son...wtf? Was this Brad Renfro's last film? He looked awful in it.

Based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel, this is another look at young rich kids living shallow lives full of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll in Los Angeles, 1983 – as the spectre of AIDS looms large above them. With multiple storylines and characters interweaving, and some notable names in the cast (Billy Bob Thornton, Mickey Rourke, Kim Basinger), this be better than it is, but the film drifts aimlessly without saying anything. Ultimately The Informers will only be remembered for Amber Heard, topless throughout, and its cool eighties soundtrack.

Thought this was going to be a good one given the first couple of minutes. By the end it's just a mini, disinteresting mess.

OK adaptation but Easton Ellis books never translate very well.

Bret Easton Ellis adaptation about the interconnected lives of various (mostly rich) f*ck-ups in 80s Los Angeles. 6/10.
