The Jane Austen Book Club
2007 Directed by Robin Swicord
Synopsis
You don't have to know the books to be in the club.
Six Californians start a club to discuss the works of Jane Austen. As they delve into Austen's literature, the club members find themselves dealing with life experiences that parallel the themes of the books they are reading.

I haven't read any Austen-novels (yet!), but that's not a prerequisite to enjoy this lighthearted feel-good fav of mine.
There are some actresses that make any movie intriguing, and this one got four of them (Emily.B, Amy.B, Maria.B and Maggie.G) - and a good additional cast.

This movie is seriously the exception to the book being better. This is such a better version of the story than the book. The various women's stories are much more consistent, and believable. Hugh Dancy really makes it fun too.

I love the women of this movie, I love the men of this movie, I love that they are doing a book club, I love that it's Jane Austen... but really.

For a romantic comedy this is not too bad. What's interesting is that the writer/director took Austen's body of work, and he crafted his story and characters around Austen's books, making for interesting parallels during the club discussions.
The actors gave good performances, helping with the enjoyment of this movie. All of them are familiar faces, Maria Bello being my favorite. Amy Brennemen and Jimmy Smits were also interesting.
I liked the contrast between Austen and scifi novels. I must admit I am not interested in Jane Austen at all, though I might have enjoyed some of the movies based on her novels. So I totally identified with the DFS character. However I wish they could have gone a little…

I got pretty into this film and its characters—I'd get annoyed at them for not doing what I'd do in their circumstances and I'd root for certain people to get together and certain people to not be together. Although I generally hate it when filmmakers use pregnancy or a baby to imply a happy ending, it didn't bother me as much in this film. In the end, it tied up nicely—much like a Jane Austen novel—and I liked that. :)

The movie meant to divide the stories by Austen and make it lived by its cast. The movie failed to do and instead became a clutter of mess.
The great part was blunt's performance which was a consolation to otherwise a below average effort. -

It's a chick flick with 'heart' and very clever tie-ins to the six Jane Austen books the club reads and bonds over. If you want a girly, easy to watch version of something like 'The Hours' (which, well, didn't translate well to film) check this out.
