Iron Man 4: Family Time
In which Iron Man plays Robert Downey Jr who must save his scene stealing father from being stuck in a bland slow motion loop of clichés.
With Oppenheimer reminding everyone of what a talented actor Robert Downey Jr. can be, there were a lot of breathless threads about how he's actually been great during these last 10-15 years as well. No renaissance in sight here! He’s been doing work this good the whole time! Cited as evidence of this in one of those threads—it seemed by a Marvel fan offended at the implication that Tony Stark was included in people's assessment when they were suggesting that RDJ was bonked on the head really hard shortly after shooting Zodiac—was this absolutely baffling nearly two-and-a-half hour Midwest legal drama that there's absolutely no way they actually saw, and more likely just came across while hastily google searching "RDJ…
this movie: *plays holocene by bon iver not once but twice*
me: oh god. oh god oh fuck. FUCK my emotional stability i guess
After a long time, finally we can see the great Robert Downey Jr. do something different than the superhero Iron Man, or even the very intelligent but insane Sherlock Holmes. Nothing against, as the success of these two blockbusters owes much to his talent and what he gives to his characters. In The Judge we can see him doing a deeper and more serious role, never losing his ironic side and that funny that always makes us laugh whenever it is necessary. Here plays a character that can be perfectly adapted to real life and I confess that I've been missing to see him again in a different register.
The Judge is divided between the courtrooms and the family drama…
“My father is a lot of unpleasant things, but murderer is not one of them.”
The Judge may not be the highly effective powerhouse courtroom drama we were expecting when we first heard about the pairing of Robert Downey Jr and Robert Duvall, but it isn’t the terrible film some critics are describing it as either. Most of us had high expectations for The Judge but once the first reviews started coming in my expectations were lowered so I went into this with moderate expectations. It is a somewhat effective melodrama when it centers on the father and son family dynamics, but when it tries to include other subplots like the courtroom drama scenes and the relationship with a former…
It's a mishmash of a fine story, subpar writing, good performances and messy directing. It's too long and Vera Farmiga's entire subplot should've been cut.
For every really good scene (and there's a lot of really good scenes), there's a scene that makes me go "no, I do not like that".
It's a mixed bag, though a rewarding one. It's very flawed, but in the end, I did enjoy it and I do reccomend it, because it's not terrible, it just never quite stops feeling like a corny and schmaltzy, though still somewhat effective melodrama.
Watch it and judge (hehe) for yourself.
David Dobkin's "The Judge" never quite makes up its mind regarding what it wants to be. Treading back and forth between family drama, comedy, and exhibition of Robert Downey, Jr. spouting pithy legal oaths, the film feels like a hodge podge of tones and plot elements. Though this may distract from a uniform sensibility, the drama still is able to compel and engage. It is not a perfect film, but, thanks to its stellar cast and engrossing narrative, "The Judge" manages to entertain.
Downey plays a lawyer who, after returning to his Midwest hometown for his mother's funeral, gets tangled up in a legal case involving his hard-nosed father. It is the kind of you-can't-go-home-again narrative that serves as the…
This seems like something a bunch of fucked up Illuminati elders came up with and then disguised as mainstream entertainment for their own sadistic amusement.
I love this film so much and yet I think with some smartness, it could've been a great movie. Robert Downey Jr is great in here, this guy can really act smoothly also Robert Duvall is so good. The dialogue in the non court scenes was sometimes too much and bad. There are some bad choices I wish they could've thought about them like that we've followed many unnecessary events. Overall, this is a fun and enjoyable experience with a really interesting story.
