Despite going into this knowing it contained 3 of my favorite actors/actresses, I was still overwhelmingly shocked by how bloody good it is.
Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo and Annette Bening in one movie was always going to have a terrific outcome. As to not spoil anything for myself I read nothing on the plot of the film, it's a brilliantly fresh idea that not any director would feel brave to tackle. Taking a realistic shot at portraying a lesbian partnership troubled by the curiosity of their children as they find out who their sperm donor father is.
The performances really are rather fantastic and understated. Annette Bening as usual being outstanding, proving why she is one of my favorite actresses…

Other than sex with Mark Ruffalo and a decent soundtrack, I just don't get this awkward film.

Thanks to Cholodenko, we can now chalk up The Kids Are All Right with the dozen other films that portray a lesbian protagonist who sleeps with a straight man, clearly pandering to the popular convention that gay women secretly long for men. It's worth mentioning because even though the film has a fresh take on the family dynamic, head-shaking stereotypes are still present. Thus, I think this film was hyped more for its controversiality and unorthodoxy than for its accomplished screenplay. Nevertheless, the premise of a family "slogging through the shit" to make things work is heartfelt and close to home; life is messy, but we soldier on.

Well this was just as enjoyable on the second viewing.
The cast are excellent, the story engaging and the characters are well-developed - particularly Laser and Paul, who have an interesting dynamic that sadly gets somewhat overshadowed by Paul's attempts to charm the women of the film.

Who the fuck has 2 sinks in the kitchen and 2 sinks in the bathroom?
It's just not feasible!

It may be a fresh idea, telling a realistic story of an unconventional but modern family, and led by a strong leading trio - Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo - but it seems that doesn't always make for a good film. The issues are all dealt with well, but it never goes far enough to move you, as the audience, in any way. With a lack of a powerful enough drama and any comedy, it only makes for a nice little story. At least I found it hard to engage with, anyway. Starring a young Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson, as well, it's easy to see why they're both going far more recently, because the performances are probably the only thing I enjoyed about this film.

That was great, it had some real emotional moments for me especially from the girl, but in general it's interesting, I really liked how the setup works with the gay setup, but the theme doesn't seem gay specific, it talks more about love and unity in a family through a long period of time. It also had a lot of funny moments, so it worked in different levels.

"The Kids Are All Right" jättis mulle päris vastuolulise mulje.
Teisest küljest sarnaneb "The Kids Are All Right" päris mitmes kohas tüüpilise Hallmark kanali filmiga. Tundelisi tseene aeglase klassikalise kitarrimeloodiaga välja juhatada on võte, mida ma ootaks pigem "Seitsmenda taeva" sarnaselt seriaalilt. Üle ühes kohas oli näha, et vaatajat proovitakse päris raskekäeliselt panna tundma emotsioone, mis neile kindlas kohas ettenähtud oli.
Siiski suutsid filmi positiivsed küljed paremini välja paista. Kuigi Ruffalo tegelaskuju oleks…

The film is best told in two parts, easily labeled as the good first half and the bad latter. I started off seeing the film as very constructive, credible and a good outfit. My postive scrawlings however quickly became disappointed scribbles on the notepad during the middle act. A metaphorical hump on the narrative road was hit, causing the film to quickly skid off in the wrong direction. If anything, how impressed I was in the beginning actually made me hate the film more, as the potential it had was clear to see. The lure of cheap plot arcs must have been too strong in the end, and this very clever drama with whit and charm became wednesday matineé viewing with a story you're more likely to see on Eastenders.

The Kids Are Alright is a film I've wanted to see for awhile, but my interest was ratcheted up after the guys at Filmspotting praised it, and in particular the performances. I really agree on the performance aspect, and in particular Mark Ruffalo. I've always enjoyed him but felt he's been wooden in several films (Collateral comes to mind). But he, along with Annette Bening and Julianne Moore are stellar (I can't forget about the kids, who were terrific as well). The story, even though it's about two lesbians, felt a bit familiar at times, and I thought the resolution occurred a bit too easily. But I'm certainly not complaining, as The Kids Are Alright is definitely worthy of the praise it has received. Definitely recommended.

A wonderfully unique comedy, very important for its time and subject matter, boasting some top-notch performances from its great cast.
