The Kite Runner
2007 Directed by Marc Forster
Synopsis
There is a way to be good again.
The Kite Runner is a 2007 American drama film directed by Marc Forster based on the novel of the same name by Khaled Hosseini. It tells the story of Amir, a well-to-do boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, who is tormented by the guilt of abandoning his friend Hassan, the son of his father's Hazara servant. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet military intervention, the mass exodus of Afghan refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the Taliban regime. Though most of the film is set in Afghanistan, these parts were mostly shot in Kashgar, China, due to the dangers of filming in Afghanistan at the time. Most of the film's dialogue is in Dari, the Afghan dialect of Persian, with the remainder spoken in English. (from Wikipedia)

The story of two afghan friends is just brilliantly drawn on the screen with Marc Foster's direction. I always liked to listen to stories. The way the characters are spinned throughout the entire story is adorable. It doesn't always happen these days. In fact, i realized very lately that the first part would connect with the second part of the movie in such an unexpected way. Bravo.

A dark, yet meaningful and captivating story of friendship, cowardice, loss and redemption. Gorgeous visuals, from the recreation of 1970s Kabul to the bustling Afghan communities in San Jose and Peshawar, back to the great mountainous vistas and tragically rubble-filled streets of modern Afghanistan. Tremendous acting, especially by the boys that portrayed the young Amir and Hassan.

I've read the book and loved it. I've watched the film and nearly loved it. Well made and kept true to the story.

Shame about the use of alcohol in this movie also...disappointed it came to this.

Under Forster's direction this is a merely adequate adaptation of an exceptional novel. The mood of the novel was not created well, and in spite of some good performances from the cast it lacked the novel's emotional punch. The story was well explored though, in spite of some changes. It does engage the viewer; but that said, I wouldn't rewatch it.

I hadn't seen The Kite Runner since its release, and now that I've read the book I can say that this is a decent adaptation. Forster changes some details to make it less of a copy paste, but doesn't change the disturbing or heartwarming scenes. The Kite Runner itself is a shitty book (get mad faggots), so Forster, despite being a weak director still manages to salvage something watchable out of Hosseini's catastrophe.

And for 3/4 of this film I was totally enthralled and then it got silly and all Americanised and I've come away feeling disappointed and cheated.
Haven't read the book so I cant comment on how true the film is but that makes little difference, I'm going on what I see and what I see is 3 stars that should have been 5. Fuck it I'm giving it 2 stars for taking it's audience as mugs.
The head of the Taliban a pedophile! Now if that isn't trying to get a point across I don't know what is. Honestly, I kid you not this film went from the sublime to the ridiculous in 60 seconds.

Watched it because of HE 101. Akala ko there would be huge ethical ambiguities pero wala naman. Huge bad decisions were made, no ambiguities there. Sad story, napanganga ako somewhere in the middle of the movie pero antagal kasi i-unfold ang story kung ano nangyari kay Hassan, and there were some unnecessary scenes.
