I intended to see the original first but since this would go on tv I've decided to watch it first.
Nothing special in the first hour, just a few laughs here and there, but it's in the final part where the most funnier moments are.
Tom Hanks is a wonderful actor, so he did a good job. Irma P. Hall was also very good.
Now I need to watch the original from 1955 to compare both. I hope I'll enjoy more than I enjoyed this. -
Eh. It's all right. It's actually pretty uninteresting. As a Coen brothers fanboy, I have to give it a higher score than it probably deserves: all the trademark Coen witticisms were there, the soundtrack, the eccentric characters, the visual styling. I could go on and on. Unfortunately, none of it was done very well. The characters were eccentric and idiosyncratic so as to be ever so slightly infuriating. What it really feels like in parts is a Coen brothers parody, with all of their movies's characteristics done in extremes, yet executed astoundingly sloppily.

Much better than I remembered. Been a good while since I watched it, I guess. The language used is awesome, I always love that style and Tom Hanks certainly delivers the lines like the pro he is. I greatly enjoy Marlon Wayans too, he doesn't always work in the films he's in but I like him very much in The Ladykillers. Needless to say, the rest of the cast is great too. It's the Coens!
I would probably say I find the film more amusing than laugh-out-loud-funny but there are still moments that crack me up. Especially when J.K. Simmons is on screen. -
In an effort to watch every movie in the Coen brothers' catalogue, I had to endure a few which I had no real interest in seeing. One such film was The Ladykillers, but thanks to my own stubborn obedience to my role as a completist, I'm happy to say that I was quite pleased with this movie. The situations are ridiculous, the characters are cartoonish, and the entire charade could be best described as "tongue in cheek", but if you're willing to let yourself be whisked away by the fantasy world that the Coens have created, you may be as pleasantly surprised with The Ladykillers as I was. If nothing else, you'll probably have a good chuckle at Marlon Wayans at some point.

Like Intolerable Cruelty, which I happened to watch yesterday, The Ladykillers is another very underrated film by the Coens. Having said that, it's definitely their weakest yet.

first time watching, reviews were horrible but i completely disagree, this is a “pop” COENS film, entertaining and funny, and maybe shallow.
the LADYKILLERS remind me of O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?, and although i notice the lack of depth, it accomplished what it was looking for, an enjoyable experience.
the LADYKILLERS is entertaining and engaging at the same time, the characters are bi dimensional buffoons, but it works, because they don’t take themselves serious.
the film remind me that TOM HANKS can work comedies too, that he can act, this was in my opinion his last good performance.
engaging and entertaining, an enjoyable experience, worth watching if you stumble upon it on tv, funny and witty it’s worth the watch. -

Lo más peor de todo es esa persona que me cae tan mal llamada Tom Hanks, que impide que me guste ninguna película en la que salga.

I am not opposed to remaking great films (and I believe the original "Ladykillers" is pretty close to great), but if you're going to do it, have a good reason and a unique vision. The Coen Brothers have a unique vision all right, but it's all wrong here. The story just doesn't work in their elevated Southern setting. It's trying way too hard in a story that demands subtlety. There are a few comic moments that work in isolation, but this one's a misfire.

I avoided this one for a long time, because I'd heard so many bad things, and for the most part I agree. While I am generally a huge fan of the Coen Brothers, I don't really enjoy their attempts at broad comedy. It often plays too over the top for me and every character in this film is so broad and over the top that much of the humor fell flat for me.
However, I will say I really enjoyed Deakins' cinematography as well as some of the repeating gags, props, and shots that ended up paying off with various character endings.
I can see why they might have been attracted to the project as it fits in quite nicely with the themes they often like to explore, but it just never really came together for me like in many of their other films.
This did make me want to at least check out the original, though.

I wonder if I would have liked this better if I hadn't already seen the original.
Watch the original.

The Coen brothers have always been hit-and-miss. Raising Arizona - Good. Barton Fink - bad. Hudsucker Proxy - good. Fargo - overrated and unfunny. Big Lebowski - hilarious. etc., etc....
This one, a remake of a 1955 Alec Guinness film, just didn't work for me. It seemed like it came so close a few times, but just didn't click. Part of the problem was that the comedy styles of Tom Hanks and Marlon Wayans just didn't work. Both can be funny in their own way, but they conflicted in this film, and not in a good way. And much like in O Brother, Where Art Thou, the filmmakers felt it necessary to bring the movie to a screeching halt every half hour to make us listen music, gospel this time.
