What happened?
How could a film with such an impeccable stellar cast, with renowned figures like Elia Kazan and Harold Pinter behind it - adapting an unfinished novel from F Scott Fitzgerald - be so utterly boring?
I don't think the fragmented structure helps. Scenes just occur with very little happening or indeed followed through within them, certainly in the opening half - a time when its vital to captivate and engage the audience.
It also doesn't help that De Niro's lead character is such a blank and uninvolving cypher. It's just as well the supporting cast are largely all leading men in their own right, as they spark up the film whenever they share screen time with him; principally…

This is Elia Kazan's last film and the one that gets the lowest score on IMDb (and third worst score on Rotten Tomatoes).
The film is based on an unfinished novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The inspiration for the protagonist of the story is no other than Irving Thalberg, the boy genius who is by many considered the best producer ever lived and died when he was only 37 years old. The film has a cast of Who's who; Robert De Niro, Tony Curtis, Robert Mitchum, Jeanne Moreau, Jack Nicholson, Peter Strauss, Donald Pleasence and I could go on! It is just a star after a star!
So why does this film get such a low score? Most agree that…

The Last Tycoon is much better than it is made out to be but much worse than I dreamed it would be.

Disappointing and pretty weak as a whole, but it's worth it seeing Robert De Niro give another fantastic performance and seeing him on screen with another fantastic actor in Jack Nicholson at the top of their game.

This is an interesting character study because it never really delves into the mind of the character, and instead leaves the audience with mystery throughout. Elia Kazan is a director that has long been recognised for creating honest and unbiased films. His 1954 masterpiece; On The Waterfront is one of the most sacred and honest depictions of life I have ever seen. The Last Tycoon comes very, very close to that and it’s probably Robert De Niro’s heart-wrenching portrayal of a man we appear to know nothing about, except his area of work.
The film features several astounding moments. The most notable being the showdown between De Niro and another movie legend Jack Nicholson. Just watching that scene gives me more than enough reason to watch it.
Kazan’s writing is also pitch-perfect and the apparent slow pace of the film is non-existent. A very, very good film.
