History will mark The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen as the movie that made Sean Connery decide to retire from the business, and for that it will always be vilified. The production history of this adaptation of Alan Moore's well regarded graphic novel could doubtless make a book all of its own, so fraught with strife revolving around Stephen Norrington's direction as it was. The fact is... LXG is not a good movie in many respects, failing on numerous script, production and performance levels, yet I can't help feel it's a little hard done by. It's not the horror story many frequently paint it as.
You can find positives, at least I certainly do whenever I catch it. Connery is watchable…

A childhood favourite, which seems a bit worse now, but I just love the delivery of the line, "I'm waiting to be impreshed?" And also, every character in this is awesome. Truly. Especially the Invisible Man. Wow, I might re-watch this...

Charisma is an important thing in a film like this. Unfortunately, Sean Connery does not posses enough of it to compensate for the blandness of most of the other cast members, most notably the villain of the piece.
There is enough to enjoy here visually. Everything looks stunning and most of the action is fine. Nemo's ship looks fantastic and the overall production design is great. All this is as it should be with a film like this.
What's wrong then? While I appreciate the fact that they managed to give the film a suitable literary feel, the plot and most of the characters just don't have any appeal. The plot is predictable and telegraphs everything well in advance. That…

For all of its ambitions, Stephen Norrington's adaptation of Alan Moore's beloved graphic novel is a very bloated film with misguided ideas and bad visual effects.

Inexplicable adaptación del comic de Alan Moore que si al menos sirvió de algo fue para sepultar la carrera de Sean Connery.

I know, I know, how could I like this film. But...I really do! So much fun! Some of the characters are EXACTLY as I imagine them. Like the faux "Magnificent Seven" build up of the team.
Thoroughly enjoyable!

This movie is so bad. It's incredibly stupid and predictable.
I love it so much. It has a SyFy channel charm to it that makes its very hard to hate.
After viewing it again recently I was shocked to learn how much Marvel's The Avengers was influenced by this film.

This movie is so fun. I'm a big fan of the comics and all the books this is based on (I haven't read 2,000 Leagues, though), so I was excited for this movie to come out and I still watch it a lot. There's a lot of fun interactions between these iconic, legendary characters like Nemo warning Jekyll to control himself and the Mina/Dorian stuff is fun.
the pace of the movie is great, the action is fun to watch, Nemo slicing up a mutant hulk is awesome.
I'll forever be sad they never made the sequel where the League fights Martians. Oh well...
