Reviews of The Lost World: Jurassic Park 1997

Part of The December Project: My Waterloo.
Oh come on, you heartless bastards. How can anyone give this a hard time?...
So it's not as good as the original. But that is mainly due to the fact that the whole initial "wow" factor is gone, but that's not its fault. The Lost World does what any great sequel needs to do, it cranks everything up to 11.
The special effects, mainly, hold up pretty well. The action is GREAT, to…

Unfortunately a big step down from the first film. While most of the crew behind the first film return to try and recreate the magic, they ultimately do not accomplish it.
Which is a shame, because there's some material established here that could have done that exactly. Whereas the first film had Alan Grant and Hammond having to mature, this film opts to have Ian Malcolm valiantly reclaim himself after being ostracized for trying to get the truth about the…

THE VALLEY OF GWANGI by way of HATARI!
the CG and compositing are sketchier now but the animatronics hold up beautifully.
i actually think the kid is one of your better adorable moppets. i like that the racial discrepancy is only vaguely accounted for, she's a decent young actress, and the gymnastics stuff isn't any dumber than the hacker nonsense from the first one.
sure the San Diego final act is tacked on (although it's essentially GWANGI's finale) but i…

Very underrated and under-appreciated. Not quite on the level of the original, but this is a seriously entertaining, well-made movie. Two of the action sequences are better than the sequences in the original, with Spielberg creating some truly suspenseful moments (awesome use of glass). The story and some scenes do get a little cheesy and over-the-top at times, especially at the end, but it didn't really detract from the overall movie much. Also, while I love John Williams main Jurassic…

This film shares a lot in common with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. It's a fairly mean-spirited sequel to hugely successful, awe-inspiring blockbuster. It's back-loaded with action set-pieces but suffers from being populated by annoying and/or underdeveloped characters. Where Temple of Doom succeeds is in being so thrilling that almost all of those negatives are overshadowed when the action kicks in. Plus, it's anchored by a still charismatic Harrison Ford.
The lead in The Lost World is Jeff…

Once again, the effects are as thrilling as the first film, but in the grand scheme of things, the premise is pretty damn stupid. At least The Lost World is self aware and knows how dumb it really is. There's no real story or plot development whatsoever, but it doesn't really matter because the majority of the cast is expendable and that's what the movie is all about. This is evident in the obvious homage to Godzilla in the final…

What I love about the Jurassic Park is that the flaws are just as entertaining as the strengths. The InGen dinosaur expert that doesn't seem to know a damn thing about dinosaurs, the crew on the boat that inexplicably die (the T-Rex couldn't have done it), the tiny car that tries to pull a giant trailer back from over a cliff. It still might not be as technically solid as the first, but it's just as entertaining.

Not a patch the original blockbuster, The Lost World has improved effects and more dinosaurs this time around but its lacks the sense of wonder and fun of the first movie...with its darker tone its not a bad thing for a second movie (e.g: Empire Strikes Back & Temple of Doom) but its just not in the same league as Jurassic Park with Jeff Goldblum & Richard Attenborough returning too its a slightly hit & miss affair with a couple of great moments the Raptor attack being a highlight then loseing its way with the T-Rex in San Diego.
