Okay, so we had this drinking game during the first Mummy-film, so I'm not sure what actually happened in this film. I just know I loved it.
I'll be sure to see these films again now that I've finally understood how pure awesome they are, and maybe then write a review where I actually understood the plot of the film.
These are perfect pulp films. And I love pulp.
Anyone have any suggestions for similar films?

Everyone has a guilty pleasure - yes, even you. The Mummy Returns qualifies most definitely as mine. Critically, it's got plenty of obvious flaws but from an entertainment point of view, it ticks so many of my boxes. It's exciting, it amps up the stakes & expands the story as every sequel should, it doesn't take itself remotely seriously and, importantly, it has FUN. Stephen Sommers, Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah - you can tell they're all having a great time and that spills out on screen, in the production. I would even go as far as to suggest this has long been quite underrated.
We can check plenty of things off that don't work, sure. How can we forget…

The moment when O'Connell finally kills the Scorpion King and then Imhotep runs up, literally right next to them, bends down and just screams to the heavens, that basically sums up this entire movie.

Not all of the terrible CGI in the world could make this look good.

Very much like watching someone play the world's coolest video game (only you're not allowed to partake); The Mummy Returns is more animated than man. And the characters you so loved from the campy original have been drained of their thirties' sass and replenished with some oddball hybrid of anachronism and self-mockery.

Enjoyable sequel, with a good balance between action and comedy.

Not nearly as good as the first film, too much silly nonsense going on. Still has good monsters though.

The Mummy Returns and so do I, it is just as flawed as the first film, perhaps even more so as they go for a bigger connection to why the first film happened and the CGI is just as bad if not worse. But it is very much the same as the first, Alex get's a little annoying but he does make a good double act with John Hannah.
If there was anything in the first film you enjoyed then you will enjoy this one as well.

I enjoyed the original movie, but sadly, it's sequel suffers from the same problems that afflict so many sequels. This movie adds a kid for the main characters to worry about, a precocious tyke who's annoying and seems out of the place in the entire story. This movie also starts piling on backstory for our leads, backstory which is completely unnecessary and serves only to complicate, not only the characters, but the plot of the movie itself. This movie adds in more villains, since obviously we can't just have the Mummy again, which also serves to complicate the plot and ends up wasting what could have been an interesting villain if given time to develop on his own. Also, John…

The first sequel to the fantastically fun 'The Mummy' is cheesier, sillier but just as fun. I have many guilty pleasures and the first 2 'The Mummy' films are two which I come back to revisit all the time, the action, the humour and characters are all fantastic and make this one of the most entertaining adventure films since Indiana Jones. Once again, the effects are dated, the story silly and events predictable and full of plot holes, but at the end of the day this wasn't made to be perfect, it was made to be fun and in that respect its a huge success. Overall, no it is not a perfect film, but its perfect entertainment, I have revisited this series many times before and will continue revisiting it many times in the future.

I can't really explain why, but anticipation for this movie was HUGE before it came out. That seems so stupid now, but I also distinctly recall this as being the first really big movie to open on the first weekend of May, and in doing so changing the box-office landscape ever since (the next year Spider-Man would destroy records on the same weekend). As for the movie itself, I really wanted to like it, but it all felt like TOO MUCH, which at the time seemed like an insane criticism. Now that I think of it, this might have been a turning point for me in terms of simply liking things for their special effects. This movie was LOADED with effects, but a lot of them were not very good, and without them the film amounts to nothing. So yeah, thanks The Mummy Returns, for further evolving my taste in cinema!
