I can’t believe it has been twenty years since the film’s theatrical debut. For two decades I have watched The Muppet Christmas Carol every holiday season without fail. Despite knowing every song, every joke and every little cameo, the film still feels as fresh as the day I first watched it as an overexcited ten-year old. It is a perfect combination of one of the greatest, most cherished and enduring creations and a novel by some guy called Charles Dickens.
The Muppets hold a special place in the hearts of many people, particularly those of my generation. Henson’s creations, including the non-Muppet variety, were a big part of our lives both on the big screen (Labyrinth, Dark Crystal etc.) and…

I was going to write a bit about The Muppet Christmas Carol but I've been distracted by Dragonborn.
I think it is important to honor the fact that I don't know if I'd be the person I am today if it was not for Jim Henson. Between introducing me to David Bowie, Big Bird, Kermit the Frog and the Fraggles, the man shaped my childhood dreams and smiles.
The Muppet Christmas Carol is not the best Muppet movie, unfortunately, and it is also not the best Christmas Carol movie but it is still better than the other Disney production of the same story with Mickey Mouse. I don't care for musicals but I've never minded songs in children's films, for…

Film #99 of The December Project
A Muppet Christmas Carol is yet another Christmas film my delinquent parents never exposed me to as a child so I'm only now seeing it as an adult. Maybe that's a good thing, because I thoroughly enjoyed this version of the ubiquitous Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. I've always had a soft spot for these crazy puppets, so going into this I already knew I would enjoy their dialogue and antics. Michael Caine has probably never given a bad performance, and this is certainly no exception. I even liked his singing voice! It isn't perfect, but it works for the ornery old man Scrooge. I can't wait to revisit this next year and for many Christmases to come. Hopefully, I'll also be able to rectify my parents' mistake and show this to my kids someday!

There must be a thousand Christmas films out there and i bet that only a handful of them sticks in your mind when you think of Christmas, I promise you this is one of the greats.

Check out the Muppet’s take on the Christmas Carol. I adore this film, it’s full of all the great Muppet characters you know and love as they re-tell this classic Christmas story Muppet style! I dare you not to shed a tear during the rather emotional scene concerning Tiny Tim. It’s full of stunning sets and a host of great musical numbers, this is perfect Christmas film for the whole family to enjoy.

64th film of The December Project
"The Muppet Christmas Carol", aka "how to get in the Christmas Spirit in under ninety minutes".
The sets are wonderful, Michael Caine is fantastic, the Muppets are great - the fact that there's almost no CGI in it is marvelous - and the whole thing is full of heart, sentiment and the spirit of Christmas. What's that? No no, I'm not crying. I just have a little... something in my eye. *sniff*

The Muppet Christmas Carol has become an annual Christmas-eve tradition in many households including my own and may be my favorite or at least a close second favorite (A Christmas Story) Christmas movie. The humor, Michael Caine, Paul William's music, this movie has it all: musical, romance, horror, comedy, Dickensian-period-drama, time-travel, MUPPETS! It's also a tradition to fast-forward (well, now skip ahead) the love-long which is boring (and Michael Caine's years of chain smoking cigars didn't help).

A fine, beautifully lensed Dickens adaptation featuring a terrific performance by Michael Caine as Scrooge. But it's also a Muppet movie which marginalizes Kermit & co for long stretches, and where their ebullient anarchy perpetually threatens to deflate the intended pathos. The incongruity proves to be both a problem and a pleasure, but mainly it's just a clumsy, moving, and intelligent testament to the possibilities of Muppet life after Henson.

This is probably a 5 start film but I wasn't fully watching it.

It had been 8 years since a Muppet movie had been released and only 2 years since Jim Henson had sadly passed away. But the movie that Jim Henson had originally wanted to be made was going to be made as a lasting tribute to him. "The Muppet Christmas Carol" was the first Muppet project produced after Jim Henson had died as well as Muppet performer Richard Hunt (performer of Scooter among others) who died in 1992. But what was produced was better than many probably would have expected.
The movie is very simple, a retelling of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, done a million times over but this one actually has Gonzo (performed by Dave Goelz) and Rizzo the…

As I recently discovered while looking through old pictures, THIS is officially my first film I saw in a theater. Not the first one I ever watched, but in a theater. This means it's always going to be special to me. It's the beginning of what's been a life long adventure.
So anyway...this is kinda where the Muppets started their near 20 year downfall. After this was Treasure Island and Muppets From Space (btw "Space" is a euphemism for "homosexual" apparently), both subpar and pretty much stopping the Muppet franchise cold. An ABC revival of the Muppet Show in the late 90's didn't have that magic at all and was quickly cancelled. Things seemed lost until The Muppets in 2011,…

One of the very, very best Christmas films. Watched it this year and it mad me very happy indeed! Remarkably metafictional too.
-
One of the best adaptions; clever and inventive with charming, touching musical numbers and a solid Michael Caine grounding all the Muppet-y proceedings. Worth a look every year.

Probably the Muppet's best film and still the best version out there.

Film #56 of The December Project and Day #21 of The Letterboxd Advent Calendar.
Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol has been adapted by seemingly everyone in Hollywood. Ebenezer Scrooge has been played by such a long list of actors, ranging from George C. Scott to Jim Carrey to even Yosemite Sam. But for my money, the best (and my personal favorite) rendition of Scrooge is Michael Caine's turn here. There's just something about Caine's distinctive accent shouting the classic lines written centuries ago by Charles Dickens.
Caine alone would be good enough for a solid adaptation of A Christmas Carol, but throw in the trademark childlike joy the Muppets inspire and you're left with a Christmas classic that deserves a watch each holiday season.
