It becomes tedious towards the ending but at the same time, this film was tremendously entertaining. Robert Preston's singing abilities are seriously outstanding. The music is very catchy and fast-paced and is well sung by everyone, and everything plays out in an interesting fashion. It is derivative but great anyways.

I love some scenes in this movie so much. If they would cut out some of my least favorite ones and make it less than 2 1/2 hours, the rating would be much higher.

Love Robert Preston and the library song/dance number is wonderful, but where the hell is the "Monorail! Monorail!" song?

The Monorail scene of Simpsons played over and over and over again.

In my opinion, one of the catchiest and most creative/weird/interesting set of songs to have been done in musicals. And yeah, so much of the plot matches the standard cliches of the genre: Guy wins over a girl over time, person is a jerk who learns to love/care/whatever again, all that good stuff.
But it's hilarious. Loving and mocking of its town in equal measure. And the leads play all those beats perfectly. Marian: brilliant and a bit bitter, wants to find someone, sarcastic and funny. "Howard Hill": Charming and roguish, a dick really, but still has a heart beating somewhere down there (how good is that line at the end "I always think there's a band kid...").
So basically, if you don't love this movie, fuck you, you should.

I did this musical in High School, so while the film is well made, it's hard to watch as I've seen/heard the musical more times than I care to! Cast is good and the songs are great!

A very good musical with great music an interesting message.
Spoilers: One could argue that the massage of the film is all you need is faith and a reason to live. The town our swindler comes to has nothing to live fore. It is as boring as any town can strife to be. Enter the swindler, the man with a plan to steal their money and exit before anyone realises that he was a fake all the time. What he did not count on was, well, a girl, but also that he would give these people a purpose, something to live for.
Sill spoilers: What I like about this plot is that maybe a purpose is more important than the…
