The December Challenge: Film 7
There are certain films that never grow old. The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! is one of those films. From the creative talents that brought us Airplane!, The Naked Gun is one of those films that appeals on lots of different levels. First and foremost it is a brilliant parody of police movies and the police in general. However, like with Airplane!, there’s much more going on here than that. Combining wit, slapstick, political commentary and all out surrealism, The Naked Gun takes the conventions of all the films that it is trying to mock and lovingly (important point that; this film is loving and is a far cry from the…

I can give it no higher praise.
If you don't like The Naked Gun, then chances are I don't like you.

I could of course spend ages reviewing in detail what I consider to be the finest deadpan spoof comedy ever made, but why bother when I can just quote some of the endless gags?
"Niiiiiice beaver..."
"Thanks, I just had it stuffed.""Nordberg has a 50/50 percent chance of survival, Frank, but theres only a 10 percent chance of that."
"Cuban?"
"No, Dutch/Irish. My father was from Wales.""Wilma, I promise you; whatever scum did this, not one man on this force will rest one minute until he's behind bars. Now, let's grab a bite to eat."
"Drebin, I don't want anymore trouble like you had last year on the South Side. Understand? That's my policy."
"Yes. Well, when I… -
There are at least five side-spliting gags and near-constant chucklers. Intelligent in its goofy parodying, fun from start to finish. You can't get any better than Leslie Nielson.

Fucking magic. Still laugh until I'm on the verge of passing out.
Nice Beaver.

Twenty-five years later, the first Naked Gun remains a total joy to watch. It is the crown jewel of the series of collaborations by David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker, even beating out Airplane in terms of jokes-per-minute. Too many classic scenes to mention here, and never better Leslie Nielsen was the quintessential lead in the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker films.

Falls just short of Airplane! as one of my all-time favourite comedies, with too many one-liners to list and so much parody and farce it's hard to keep up. Stupid, immature, but somehow brilliantly clever at the same time.

A pretty much perfect comedy.

Considering how much I enjoyed watching Airplane!, I expected to like The Naked Gun much more than I did. I think there’s something about this that just doesn’t work for me; I felt like very few of the jokes were as inspired or memorable as I’d hoped for and that everything develops a little too predictably.
Its plot is simple and focusses on bumbling cop Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen), who is about as incompetent as they come. He’s also quite funny, though, and everything that works here is down to Nielsen. The jokes are pretty poor so it’s down to the actor to make this material work and he manages it for most of the film.
The comedy is pretty…

Twenty five years old and The Naked Gun is still laugh out loud funny with a perfect mix of sight gags and brilliantly delivered lines.

Classic comedy. Plot: A bumbling cop tries to foil an attempted assassination attempt on the queen during a state visit to the US. Neilsen's deadpan delivery and perfect writing make this one of the funniest films of all time. Classic.

This was one of my favourite films as a kid (pretty fucked up that I only found out today that it's a 15!?!?!? NICE PARENTING) and it's still hilarious to me. Just some proper classic pratfalls, love the sequence where Drebin accidentally sets the office on fire.
Kind of odd to see O.J. Simpson in this but at least his only joke is that he gets hurt a lot.
I wish there were still comedies like this being made today. Just really silly and stupid with lots of gags that don't leave a bad taste in your mouth. Hot Rod comes close.
