The Names of Love
2011 ‘Le nom des gens’ Directed by Michel Leclerc
Synopsis
Make Love, Not War
Bahia Benmahmoud, a free-spirited young woman, has a particular way of seeing political engagement, as she doesn't hesitate to sleep with those who don't agree with her to convert them to her cause - which is a lot of people, as all right-leaning people are concerned. Generally, it works pretty well. Until the day she meets Arthur Martin, a discreet forty-something who doesn't like taking risks. She imagines that with a name like that, he's got to be slightly fascist. But names are deceitful and appearances deceiving..

Thanks to Simone for mentioning this movie somewhere. I had it laying around, but it made it a lot earlier into my playlist thanks to that mention.
Within 3 minutes and 20 seconds, which is the pre-opening credits segment, I knew Sara Forestier was about to make my day. Her Baya is irresistible from the opening, and she's just getting better and better as we get more familiar with this young free-spirited character with her peculiar way of doing politics.
This is a good-mood pill wrapped around some more serious issues, but the serious sides never overstay their welcome before another smile is put on my face. Overlooking the 17-18 minutes or so of back-story coming after the opening credits…

Come for Sara Forestier, stay for Sara Forestier, dream of Sara Forestier. Hell, let's just put Sara Forestier in all of the things.

Absolutely charming and funny movie about subjects and themes usually not touched upon in comedies like this.

Romantic comedy that does not deny its origin. Ah, the French film and its nudity and idealism.

A perfect french movie, a little crazy but possible in a weird way.

Inteligente comedia romántica con judíos traumados, inmigrantes argelinos y una mujer que usa el sexo como arma política.

There's a nice lucidity about the film. What's interesting about this "romantic comedy" is that for all of its romance, it's not actually all that funny. Which is not inherently a bad thing. The subject matter it handles is very different from what a lot of typical rom coms deal with. But they handle it well. Lovely two leads. It sets itself up in very conventional situations, but takes them in drastically different directions. It's a lovely, but odd little film.
