I have seen Sandra Bullock in many bad movies, but she possesses such an inherently likable screen presence that she never really annoyed me, even in the worst of these films. I had a theory that she could survive any material and still come out looking good.
Thank you, The Net, for disproving this theory.
Sadly, the last few days I have been watching movies where the main characters are dumb. They're stupid. It's like watching Prometheus all over again. And it's very frustrating. Bullock's character in this film is so dumb; the computer tech in this movie makes no sense; and the plot of this movie relies on so many coincidences that it strains even the most forgiving credulity.…

A first watch since 1998 I think and wow this movie has a lot to say about the internet behavioural patterns of 2013. Some of the content of this movie is astounding, I find it hard to believe that it is technologically accurate but if its sci-fi then the film makers had a strong idea of how certain things would evolve.
I used to love the movie because I was 14 and it featured Sandra Bullock in a bikini, and that is still a good reason to enjoy this film in my opinion. That aside it's an OK 90s thriller with some very good direction mixed with some really quite bad decisions and some truly awful writing (what would you expect from the guys behind T3, Terminator Salvation, Catwoman and Surrogates?) combined with a strong knowledge of the key elements of Hollywood storytelling.
A mixed bag but in general its still quite fun all the same.

"Two months ago, I saw a provocative movie on cable TV. It was called The Net, with that girl from the bus. I did a little reading, and I realize, it wasn't that farfetched."
-
The least believable thing about the movie was anyone being friends with Dennis Miller.
-
An amusing, if not largely forgettable film that really has no clue how computers or the internet work.

I remember when I first saw this, being a recent fan of Bullock, the high light was seeing her in a bikini! I used to think this movie was dumb and could never happen. Remember, internet wasn't huge back then.
Now I see it and it's totally plausible. Bullock is great and Northam plays a fantastic bad guy. The movie can go on one chase scene too long, but I bet this film would've been way bigger had it been released a good ten years later.

Forget about the technology--it's Sandra Bullock's high-waisted jeans that REALLY make me feel old.

Only caught the end, but that was probably enough. Not sure whether I was chuckling at the well-worn tropes or the 90's technology. (Floppy disks rock!)
