Dare to face your inner child...
CAPSULE REVIEW: I contend that a movie can always improve by not having Michael Madsen subtly hamming it up for the screen. I know that sounds like an oxymoron but Madsen has almost no tricks up his sleeve, no charm, not even screen presence, only a huge amount of empty attitude. He always seems totally indifferent and bored. He is like David Caruso’s long lost, huskier twin. I can't stand him. But “The Portal” has bigger problems than having Madsen in the cast. It has an interesting premise but no funds to back it up and no sense of style or ambiance. I guess “The Portal” is supposed to work as a modern ghost story and not a sheer horror movie, but some jolts would have certainly been welcome. This movie suffers from really poor production values too giving everything a sheen of mediocrity.
