Part of the Ultimate Marvel Movie Marathon:
letterboxd.com/evileyeperry/list/the-ultimate-marvel-avengers-movie-marathon/I've seen this a number of times now and despite the obvious flaws and fluctuating tone in parts, I still think that this is really quite good.
Maybe it's Tom Jane's passion for the character? Or the good turn from Travolta? Maybe it's the fact that this clearly has little to no budget? I don't know why, but it just seems to have this charm to it. The Russian fight scene, the torture scene, the OK-ish action, it just seems to work with what its got and does it well enough.
Fluctuating from hardcore violence to some comedic scenes lifted straight from the comics, this is a good little movie that'll please…

I loved it. There i said it. Let the unfollowers commence

It's actually pretty good, especially as far as comic book adaptations go (minus the late ones). Travolta does especially well, though that may be my fanboy-ness of the guy, haha...
I like the dark approach, and some of the goofy humor. It's very cheesy in some parts, but it works overall. Not much in terms of emotional depth, or particular acting from the lead, but he's not bad either.
3 / 5 = Quite good, flaws present.
P. S. Aaron Paul, who plays Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad, appears here as a junkie. Coincidence? I think not...

Thomas Jane is the best Frank Castle. Hoping he does more Punisher related thing in the future like he did with #DIRTYLAUNDRY.

I was familiar with the character, but never read the comics. I was surprised to find this a decent revenge flick. I do, however, think setting such a dark story and character in sunny Florida hurt it. Maybe they were going for the contrast, but I think the tone would have carried better in more of a dark, gritty setting like Detroit, NYC, etc.
The cast handles their roles well, with the exception of John Travolta and yet another wrestler trying to act as some over-the-top Russian badass.
The little ending monologue ("Call me...The Punisher!") just felt silly and out-of-place in a movie that otherwise seemed pretty grounded in reality, avoiding that obvious comic adaptation feel that most of them have. I can't say it's a good flick, but worth a rental.

this goes an awful long way to make its version of vigilantism seem palatable, which is no fun at all.

Not the gonzo revelation that its sequel turned out to be, but also not the utterly anonymous mediocrity I had assumed it was after catching bits and pieces on TV, the movie is rooted in the same exploitation, DTV tradition as its follow-up, though with a moderately more naturalistic inflection, so that gun play set-pieces that should take off remain grounded, and the requisite sadism proves to be relatively demure compared to Lexi Alexander's Grand Guignol impulses. But even though it is longer than it needs to be, Henslaigh generally keeps the proceedings well-paced, and evidence of his mildly endearing inner goof-ball abounds around the edges.

What could be an interesting dissection of the need for revenge, especially when it pushes itself to sadistic levels, and the inherent emptiness of seeking vengeance, turns out to be something more resembling a massive, unpleasant and stinking turd.

Apparently the sequel that got made is supposed to be even worse.

No Oscar winner, but I liked Travolta in it.
