Reviews of The Raid: Redemption 2012
-
Back in 2012 I was itching to see this movie, what with all the clamour amongst movie reviewers about how it revivifying the action genre. I remember reading Roger Ebert's review and thinking he must be hopelessly out of touch for panning the movie (the inevitable dismissal referring to its similarities to video games he made sealed the deal). But upon actually watching the film for the first time, I have to say that not only is the video game…

The choreography is impressive, but I'm pretty sure this film was directed by a psychopath. The film is so tonally misguided it renders each fight scene into a grotesque freakshow. Had it embraced a campier tone, like SHOOT 'EM UP, we might have had something here, but as it stands this might have been the most unpleasant viewing experience I've had in quite some time.

An intense, no holds barred orgy of violence - in short, the best and most exciting action film that I have seen in a long time. The plot is simple: a SWAT team sent in to take out a crime lord gets trapped and has to fight their way out. It essentially has everything that a good action film needs: a likeable protagonist; hordes of disposable bad guys; lots of guns; lots of knives; an insane henchman who can deal…

Just ridiculously awesome.

A good film with great action, it only falls short of being a great action due to flaws from a somewhat inexperienced director resulting in many fight scenes dragging on for far too long

Some trips to the cinema are as much about the experience of watching the movie, as it is to experience the movie in itself.
As such, there may be slight bias due to festival buzz at the 16th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF, appropriately), but The Raid deserves to be seen in a packed auditorium, with people squealing and wincing with every punch, dagger stab, impalement and spine break this relentless action movie has to offer.
The final fight sucked…

Lots of action. Less story.

There were flaws, but I was in a perfect state of mind to be completely mesmerised by the choreography. And it was mesmerising beyond belief
