Reviews of The Reader 2008

the best one

A powerful drama about consequence, affection and isolation. The Reader manages to engage and provoke throughout and this is in no small part due to the superb screenplay by David Hare.
Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes and David Kross' performances are magnificent and with a supporting cast which includes Bruno Ganz and Linda Bassett, there's not a weak link in the chain. The difficulty here was to maintain a continuous resonance with the Michael Berg character which shifts between Fiennes and…

Pretty much what I anticipated. Well-polished and lifeless. Well-acted and empty. Don’t know what the deal is, but man do Daldry’s films not work for me. BILLY ELLIOT = meh. THE HOURS = meh. THE READER = meh. Never thought I’d get bored of seeing Kate Winslet naked, but Daldry did it. His theater work is some of the most magical I’ve ever seen (BILLY ELLIOT ONSTAGE = holy s#*%!), but for film he’s definitely on my list of directors…

I hesitated a lot before watching this movie because I thought it would make me very uncomfortable but actually... I really liked it. Kate Winslet is amazing as always and she makes this strange story feel almost romantic (as does the young actor). It was just very powerful and very well shot and it really got to me!

I thought The Reader was a very twisted film. If you know the plot of the film, you'll know why I say it's twisted. I'm not saying the film bad, it's excellent and terrific. The story is very interesting and the cast is great, but the plot is messed up.What I mean is that the film is not confusing, but the plot is wow. a Young man one summer has an affair with a woman, who years later encounters in…

Great romantic drama from director Stephen Daldry starring some fantastic performances from Kate Winslet, David Kross and Ralph Fiennes. It's a story that centers around sadness and guilt as the main emotions. It slowly started getting to me and finally didn't let me go until the very end. I feel this is the best performance I've seen from Kate Winslet and I like her in most, if not all the films I've seen her star in. Recommended!

Hmm, what to say about this film. It began a bit slow and I was tempted to turn it off because I felt all the sex and nudity was gratuitous. But then I had to keep watching as what happens in the beginning begins to mean so much more in the end, and I had to get to the end. I think I would have enjoyed the book more...

A overlong, self-important mess of a film with some bad performances from some good actors. It's a mess.

One of the best films I have ever watched. Every detail from acting, directing, script, and overall content was beyond anything I have seen. Kate Winslet in my opinion deserved an oscar for the performance, not comparing to anyone else in the category just that she deserved one for this performance. Michael Kross for such a young actor did an amazing job and even though he isn't in the film as much as Kate and Michael, Ralph did a great…
