For a film about a pervert stalker (as in a stalker who is a pervert, not a person who stalks perverts) creeping around a woman's apartment, wanking in her bath and sucking on her fingers in her sleep, there is a distinct lack of atmosphere and tension in The Resident.
Swank is decent enough but plays a very plain character. I quite like Jeffrey Dean Morgan anyway, and at times he was creepy as the odd neighbour Max, but it did feel like a slightly restricted performance. Like he wasn't quite achieving full on psycho. Christopher Lee was a bit wasted.
It was an ok film. It's not the creepiest film ever made, but it's decent. It'll pass an hour and half if you're bored and have run out of other things to watch.

Hilary Swank is an odd bird. She’s a two-time Oscar winner yet somehow she’s only ever been in 2 decent-to-good films. For every Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Babys, she makes a half dozen The Cores and The Reapings. I think she clearly wants to be a mainstream movie star, but she really needs to start making good movies.
THE RESIDENT isn’t doing anything to help her cause. What started as an admittedly-obvious-but-still-interesting-enough thriller quickly 180d into a silly mess with a single ill-timed reveal. It’s obvious from the start that there’s something not quite right with Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s landlord character, but the movie jumps to the revelation of his menace immediately as the tension starts to get interesting. From that point on it devolves into an uninspired collection of jump scares.
Bottom line, there’s nothing exciting about this movie. It’s a shame. Swank and Morgan are both great actors. You’d never know it from this, though.

There are three interesting things in the first minutes of The Resident: the new Hammer Films logo, the uncommon beauty of Hillary Swank, and an eerie portrait of New York akin to those in Rosemary's Baby or The Believers. None of these things are enough to prevent catastrophe.

Compact little thriller from Hammer Films that had me interested but then blew it by revealing everything far too early on. The Swank is good,as is the psycho guy,but the decision to drop the tension the film had built up in the first half hour and tell the viewer everything in one fell swoop is puzzling.

Story line was quite poor. Watched all of it but could have been better.
