The Running Man
1987 Directed by Paul Michael Glaser
Synopsis
A game nobody survives. But Schwarzenegger has yet to play.
By 2017, the global economy has collapsed and American society has become a totalitarian police state, censoring all cultural activity. The government pacifies the populace by broadcasting a number of game shows in which convicted criminals fight for their lives, including the gladiator-style The Running Man, hosted by the ruthless Damon Killian, where “runners” attempt to evade “stalkers” and certain death for a chance to be pardoned and set free.

Did you know that when you eat cheese it releases an opiate called 'casomorphin' into your stomach, making you feel all good and giddy?
I guess eighties cheese is no different, because for some reason I really, really like this cheese fest based on source material a gazillion times better.

I love a good dystopia. This one has just the right amount of cheese, action, quotable dialogue, sexy Latinas (who would be played by Sophia Vergara today), smarmy bad guys, and biting social commentary.
We won't quibble over petty details, like how easy it was for the rebels to take over the station. Or how little the story resembles the book. Let's just rejoice in the awesome awesomeness of this awesome movie.

hunger games and battle royal BOTH stole from this shit
which goes to prove everyone gets ideas fomr everywhere so who cares..
THIS WAS FUCKING AWESOME!! Arnold beard, tight suits.. epic kills and the soundtrack .. oh not to mention Richard Dawson!OHHHH MAN!

There's just a certain charisma about Arnie that you can't help but find entertaining. The Running Man is only one of the long and evergrowing list of Arnold's 80's delightful cheese action and it's one of the best.
With a premise that I'm sure the original novelist imagined most definitely without Arnold at the helm, The Running Man is packed full of cheesy one liners, great action and a serious premise done over the top silly. Got to love it.

Will write about this at length for next week, but my general feeling is that its mix of heady sci-fi and hyper-violent '80s Schwarzenegger action is significantly less satisfying than Total Recall in both departments. The world of the film is full of political and satirical opportunities that are largely unexploited, and this has to be the biggest repository of clunky Arnold one-liners outside Batman & Robin. Still, Richard Dawson.

Who loves you and who do you love?
Damon KillianI'm not sure how they pulled it off, but it seems that in 1987 they made a satire about Reality Television. That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it's almost impossible to watch this movie today and not notice the enormous similarities to how Reality TV is run today. Sure it's taken to extremes, but that's actually what a satire usually does.
Now I love Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's made some of my all time favorite action movies. I can enjoy almost anything he's in, even his less then stellar accomplishments. I have to admit however that Richard Dawson steals the show for me here. I'm sure they thought…

Running Man is a weird gem. Somehow it is way ahead of it's time (social commentary on reality TV in 1987) & totally badass fun but somehow it still isn't the classic it could have been. can't help thinking if a more visionary director 1987 Paul Verhoeven or David Cronenberg directed this it would be looked at one of the king films of the era. while it's seriously fun, Arnold is fantastic as always, it looks pretty good and moves at a good pace, there's always just something a little tame about Running Man.
also, couldn't help thinking of Hunger Games during this & i wonder why more people haven't made that comparison. -

Completely ridiculous but incredibly fun with some truly cracking Arnie one liners and a true 80's sense of excitement. Scenes often get repetitive and some effects have not aged well but this is a stupid film for any occasion.

This movie rips off The Hunger Games so hard.
Katniss > Arnold.

This is a great film conceptually, although the execution has not aged well and parts of the plot are a little repetitive. This would benefit from a remake for sure.

In addition to being awesome fun, this prophetic film correctly predicted the takeover of mindless, exploitative reality TV as well as the use of CGI in video production. Besides, what other movie has not one but TWO future governors shouting out one-liners and handing out beatdowns? PREDATOR, you say? OK, besides that.

cheesy action is coupled with an interesting concept in this film and it is definetiley enjoyable
