Well, sometimes, flicking through the backwaters of Lovefilm Instant can throw up a very surprisingly good film.
It's a typical "con" film in many ways; Samuel L Jackson has just gotten out of prison, his old partner-in-crime's son (who Sam L killed) blackmails him (in a very twisted way, I won't spoil it) into pulling one last con with him. It, of course, goes slightly awry.
It's not any different to the same basic story that's been retold a 100 times before, but considering it has been done on a very low budget, it's actually a decent, well made, impressive little film.
Everyone's well cast, there's a few big names in it (or at least recognisable faces) but Jackson puts…

I may have overrated The Samartian, but I have a weakness for film noir, and there aren't too many good noir films out there.
Plot is not the most important element of noir, since most of them are similar. There are always twists in the middle and the end, nothing is what it seems. The hero has good intentions but they are flawed. Police usually don't exist in noir films, or they are corrupted. The villains are always ruthless and then there is a Femme Fetale, which seems vulnerable but often not.
The Samaritan has a familiar plot. We got a flawed hero wanting to go straight, a femme fetale with a mysterious past, villains who can be ruthless if…

A tense taunt noir thriller with Sam Jackson bringing all his usual gravitas to a more complex role then he's had in a while. It does fall apart in the last 15 minutes, but for the most part it's an emotionally engaging film, with Toronto like I've never seen it before.

The Samaritan is about Incest! Incest is gross; unless you are into that sort of thing.

If I named which movie this cribs its mid-length twist from, I'd basically be giving away the twist.
That twist (and a fairly subdued performance from Jackson) is about all that distinguishes this from a lot of "paroled criminal gets roped into another job" movies, and as is typical of movies made over here, such twists are used to just throw a whole bunch more plot into the movie, some of which works.
That's almost enough. Not a bad crime movie; Jackson helps sell it better than the casts of most.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW: I must say that I enjoyed this noirish (or neo-noirish) thriller with Samuel L. Jackson, a versatile actor that has almost had a ten year long streak of poor carrier choices (at least in the capacity of a leading role). With a unexpected and somewhat cringeworthy twist by the third act this movie redeems itself by being unassuming and weirdly stylish through without turning into a pastiche of the movies it tries to emulate.

20 vuoden lusiminen on ohi. Kiltin loppuelämän pilaa rahasotkut, joihin ajautuu puoliväkisin mukaan. Rakkauttakin olisi ilmassa, tavallaan.
Väkinäistä aseilla osoittelua, diilejä ynnä muuta paskaa.

A small, contained film about a man"Foley" (Samuel Jackson) who has just gotten out of prison after serving 25 years, for murdering his best friend. Upon release, l the son of the murdered friend tries to convince Foley to break the terms of his parole by participating in one last grift.
The movie has one or two surprising twists to it that really turn the story on its head - in a good way - and accomplishes a fairly serviceable "film noir."
Not the best film noir I've seen but, not the worst either.
