There are certain movies that you instantly put on your wish list as soon as you discover their existence. In my case, shallow as it may sound, this reflex largely depends on the cover art illustration. I have a weakness for horror movies with vintage posters, kind of like how they all looked in the raunchy seventies and lurid eighties. When coincidentally stumbling upon the IMDb page of "The Sleeper" a few months ago, with its poster image that bears a lot of resemblance with such films as "Don't Go in the House", "Black Christmas" and "The Dorm that Dripped Blood", and simultaneously reading that writer/director Justin Russell intends to bring a…

Justin Russell's throwback to 80's slashers nails the homage right on the head. A great looking retro-slasher that wears its influences on its sleeve, and manages to pay them considerable respect without ripping them off outright. A worthwhile indie flick.

A great deal of fun, with very clever nods to Halloween and Black Christmas. Ala House of the Devil- a modern made slasher - Shot/Plotted/Acted all in a tribute to and in the style of Late 70's early 80's slashers

I don't understand what the point is of making these retro throwback type movies. Sure, fine, you spent your childhood watching Slumber Party Massacre and Sleepaway Camp. Good for you. So did almost every other horror buff I know. It's not that it's a bad movie. I've seen worse. it's just not creative in the least and frankly it was boring. Right now, I'm just about starving for some originality in my horror and I haven't seen it in a good long while.

Quite boring little slasher, even if it has some gory murders. Made to look like it's from the early 80s.

If punk rock is an excuse to not learn how to play your instruments, then retro-style horror like this is an excuse to not learn how to write a good script.

The Sleeper really missed the mark. It's hard to criticize the movie because they were most likely lacking budget but it's also hard to not compare it to a very, very successful throwback done by Ti West that was done well and proper (House of the Devil, anyone?).
Now, I know I'm probably nitpicking but I was alive and around in the 1980s and the fashion was all wrong, the rap music and line dancing was all wrong and the vocabulary of the actors was all wrong, not to mention the hair and makeup. If you're going to make a film that is supposed to be from a certain period, budget or not, do your research and try a little harder next time.
There were a few scenes with decent gore that, while good, couldn't make up for everything else I found irritating with this throwback entry. Although, I'm not going to lie, Joe Bob Briggs was a nice touch.

Just watched THE SLEEPER and overall I feel like I got my money's worth. The killer was appropriately menacing and some of the kills were very effective. There were parts of it I liked more than others, and it took kind of awhile for the movie to take shape, but I found myself reasonably engaged by the end of it. I can agree with the complaints about the cardboard sleeve, but I still relish the opportunity to enjoy a new horror VHS release whenever it happens. We're living now in a golden age of VHS revival - it should be realized that the equipment and expertise necessary to produce new VHS tapes isn't going to be around forever, and it…

A modern day "retro" note-for-note study of Halloween and When A Stranger Calls and every other 80's Slasher film. Well done, but this facsimile is hardly necessary viewing for anyone unfamiliar with the genre.
