The Smurfs
2011 Directed by Raja Gosnell
Synopsis
Smurf Happens.
When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours -- in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

The December Project Movie 51:
I am shocked at how much I enjoyed this, and how good it actually is.
The story and whole premise is as ridiculous as THe Smurfs cartoon was, so if they changed that it would have taken to much away.
Although, in the cartoon, evil Gargamel wanted to eat the Smurfs, that might have been a little grotesque for a childrens movie, so instead he wants to harvest their essence in order to become the most powerful and fear sorcerer.
The voice talent is really good, especially for Papa Smurf, every time he had some words of wisdom I couldn't help but take in every word.
I love the new addition of Gutsy Smurf, the scottish themed, kilt wearing brave.
And in my eyes Neil Patrick Harris is amazing at everything, this included.
I'd watch this again, I now feel genuinely happy just for having seen it. -
Stopped after 37 minutes. Aside from a brief GREMLINS 2-esque moment where the movie mocks its own universe, there's really nothing to see here.

What the Smurf was I thinking when I decided to watch this Smurfing movie?

I don't know what's worse, that I watched this or that there's two more in the pipeline. Now, I better review a lot of movies quickly, so nobody notices!

Coming straight from pop culture reference hell on a mission to suck every last bit of joy and nostalgia out of you.

Just isn't a mature story and the humour is a little childish. Perhaps to be expected.

Actually quite funny, not sure the kids understood all the jokes. Wife thinks Smurfette looks like Katie Perry, I think she looks like Smurfette - does that mean Katie Perry actually looks like Smurfette?

Only caught a few glimpses while sitting next to my kids and boy, this is bottom of the barrel type stuff. Corny and cheesy and vomit inducing.

Plain old children's flick, Hank Azaria (Gargamel) kept the whole show running. If not for his quirky antics the whole movie is a let down.

Ok so I grew up with the Smurfs, one of the only reasons I woke up before noon on saturdays! I really wanted to love this movie and as the previews came out I slowly started to hate it as the voices were all wrong and the names of the Smurfs were all wrong. So I did what any smurf fan would do and I boycotted the movie! I have to admit that despite my misgivings it was actually a good movie.
The casting of Hank Azaria as Gargamel and Neil Patrick Harris were great and they really made the movie for me... The mixture of live action and animation blended well together. I am glad they went with a live action, computer altered cat for Azriel, he was too funny!
I probably won't see the next one in the theater but I will probably put it in my queue...

Nippu sinisiä pottuneniä singahtaa keskelle suurkaupunkia. Perässä vyöryy paha setä isoine etuhampaineen.

Yeah, uh, this was pretty bad. Family went to free screening, went along, and I'm embarrassed that I watched it. Not funny, horrible plot and, sadly, bad acting even by NPH. Annoying song. Oh and now children will be encouraged to replace "bad words" with "smurf" and think they get away with it. Horrible film. Oh and they didn't even try very hard to mix the two actors with the smurfs. You could see their hands/arms moving awkwardly to pretend they were holding them. Pitiful.

I saw this at the cinema, it was great in 3D.
