How far would you go?
An upper-middle-class couple's life is destroyed when their only child is kidnapped and killed. Obsessed with revenge, the couple seizes an opportunity to kidnap the killer.
If you couldn’t guess from the title, The Tortured, is another inept torture porn movie, much like the rest of a sub-genre that really could do with dying itself. When a couple’s child is kidnapped and murdered by a serial killer they decide traditional punishment is too good for him and want to make him suffer the way their own son did. Foolishly I was hoping for a film that explored the moral complexity of an eye for an eye revenge yet it only gives this dilemma the scantest regard. Instead, once you get over the lengthy set-up, this is merely a sequence of increasingly nasty tortures.
The casting is very odd with both parents (Erika Christensen and Jesse Metcalfe)…
Not too high of expectations for this one. The overacting by the lead couple is excruciatingly annoying. Poor Erika Christensen who showed potential as an actress comes across as a drama student in their first horror film. I never found myself rooting for the parents especially with their constant flip-flop morals (this is wrong! What are we doing? This is right! we deserve revenge!). The ending did catch me off guard but ends up being a cheat. I think I am officially done with the torture porn genre. It also frightens me at how good Bill Mosely is at playing a child murderer.
I really wanted to like THE TORTURED. It has decent actors. It has a premise and themes that could be really interesting if done right. And it was produced by those behind the SAW films - a franchise I don't hate as much as others. But THE TORTURED doesn't really have much to offer to any audience. Bland characters. A theme that never takes off. Generic direction. Plot points that feel forced rather than natural. If it weren't for a certain performance, decently shot tortured scenes, and a promising opening act, THE TORTURED would be more of a failure than it actually is. It's a shame because this could have been something really good. Instead, I think the only ones who will be tortured by this film are the people watching it. Pretty disappointed by this one big time.
This is another one that goes straight into my top 50! Fantastic tale of revenge, some horrible torture that had even me squirming, and an ending you definitely won't see coming.
Director Robert Lieberman crafts a torture porn revenge flick that has some sketchy but at times pretty decent performances. As far as the film is concerned, it's a decent low-budget horror outing that could have been so much better than what it turned out to be. There is so many ways that they could have made a powerful revenge horror film with these ingredients, however there's something not quite right with the way the film was executed. If the film's script could have been rewritten a bit, and its structure been refined, then you'd have a compelling and memorable horror yarn. What you have here is a film that doesn't take enough risks, while trying g to shock as much…
I dug this film and keep finding my way to Bill Moseley...
This is only getting half a star because Letterboxed doesn't allow a zero star rating. I have seen A LOT of bad horror movies, but there is almost always some redeeming factor, something which salvages it and, in some cases, even makes it charming. We all know the phrase 'so bad it's good' -- well this film is simply BAD.
The script could have been written by a high school student, terribly inconsistent with laughably unbelievable dialogue in almost every scene. The acting is almost as bad - could this movie have been saved with better actors? probably.
The way it was shot, no craftmanship or artistry whatsoever, I feel that the D.O.P just figured 'let's stick that same dark…
Started off really good, but then became totally stupid and ridiculous!
Why the FUCK would you ever leave the key for your prisoner anywhere near him!!
This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.
A child is kidnapped and murdered but the parents are not happy with the sentence the killer is given so they take matters into their own hands.
The acting is average at best with a basic story and a basic twist. I didn't hate this, I gave it 2 1/2 stars for an ok movie, I was entertained. I had low expectations going into it so I'm sure that helped.
