The only John Wayne one of the 9 movies in 1934 season not to feature George 'Gabby' Hayes. But they get a good replacement in Noah Beery. Both Junior & Senior. The younger as his friend and partner, but who the hell casts Noah Sr as a good guy?! Oh.... Robert N. Bradbury. Well regardless of acting talent this naturally turns into another faceless shoot'n'ride western.
I did love that they kept in a screw-up as John Wayne (or his stunt double rather) tries to leap from his horse in speed over to a stagecoach, but couldn't hold on and fell hard to the ground. He got back on his horse and managed it the second time. Either they didn't want to waste any film and kept it in there or they wanted the realism with spectacular fall in there. Probable a mixture of both. -
One of the better Lone Star movies with John Wayne. Some outstanding stunts with horses jumping off cliffs (I guess no animal rights groups watching movies those days), beautiful scenery (National Monument, California doubling as Canada), better plot, Wayne in a three piece suit and co-starring Noah Beery Jr. who would star as Rocky 40 years later in The Rockford Files.
