Whatever part of my mind possessed me to watch this with my mother deserves a thorough spanking and a trip straight to bed without any supper. It's not the awkwardness of watching nudity-filled pagan rituals that made the experience so unpleasant, though, but instead my dear old mum's stunning self-determined ignorance when it comes to movies. She's the sort of person who labels my tastes weird for including black and white films, who thinks subtitles are a reason to change the channel, who firmly believes watching a movie should be an experience for which a switched-on brain should not be a requirement. She is, in short, probably not biologically related to me. It's perhaps the greatest compliment that can be given to it that she utterly hated The Wicker Man.

Director - Robin Hardy
Writer - Anthony Shaffer
Cast - Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Diane Cilento, Britt Ekland, Irene Sunters, Ingrid Pitt and Russell WatersEvery now and then a film comes along that just grabs you by the balls (metaphorically speaking if you’re a lady…) and simply refuses to let go. The Wicker Man is one of those films, in more ways than one. Hailed as one of the best British horror movies of all time, The Wicker Man acts as a master class in atmosphere and tension. And yet to call it a horror film almost seems insulting. The Wicker Man is a film that is rich in both metaphor and imagery, and it is one of…

Previously, i have only seen the Nicholas Cage version of this story, and we all know how that turned out. Best comedy of 2006. Much, much more enigmatic and sly than the remake, The Wicker Man is a mysterious and subtle horror film that builds its tension not from scary moments or strange goings on, but of complete curiosity of the stories events and hidden agendas. Because of these things it has not aged badly at all, horror does that, and i wouldn't say this is exactly a horror, but more of a suspense mystery encircled with a chilling vibe. As i have seen the 2006 version i briefly knew where the plot was going and the twists to anticipate,…

Annual May Day viewing of this great classic. With this viewing, I think I'm finally coming around to Christopher Lee's opinion that this isn't a horror film. It's too expansive to be forced into a genre corner.

Creepy film, despite nearly all the scenes being set during the day. This has not aged well but I still think the plot is intriguing and I would be interested in seeing the remake.

Watching this while driving I admit was a monumental mistake, as I am having trouble removing the gearstick from inside my anus.
I still liked it, though. I just wouldn't recommend doing what I did.

Completely bizarre and eccentric, but incredibly frightening, The Wicker Man is a true horror masterpiece with one of the greatest endings I have witnessed. Note to self: Never visit Summerisle. The inhabitants and island itself is crafted so perfectly making this one of the creepiest settings for any film I have seen, strange seeming as the inhabitants are constantly cheerful and friendly. The film is completely bizarre from its constant use of song, to its sexual rituals all the way to its education and school practice, and this weirdness is another bolstering factor as to why this is one of the most creepy movie experiences I have had. Its acting, sound, music, production and set design (especially The Wicker Man itself) etc. are all fantastic but here the true gem is the writing and direction. One of the most terrifying, strange and best horror films around with an ending ranking among the top in cinema history.

Wow.
Shocks are so much better absorbed with the knees bent indeed.
