One of my very earliest cinematic memories, so early I just remember striking images and in no way understood the plot then, but it still terrified me to no end, particularly when they "get down" into the subway. Par for the course with all Oz adaptations, The Wiz in particular had the dark, dank graffiti-filled urban landscape or yellow colored bizarro imagery to add a little more intrigue to my nightmares. Rewatching it helped put things into perspective. It has charming production values and interesting enough musical numbers to keep things moving. Michael Jackson is also sane in it. This is really one of the high water marks in indulging in 70s grooviness next to Grease and I really hit nostalgia overload watching it. Transported me to an era I wish I could visit in person. Awesome double-bill with The Muppet Movie for your childhood 70s kick.

Seeing that Joel Schumacher wrote the script I now know where he got some of his ideas for his Batman films. Also the cowardly lion is really Zuul from Ghostbusters.

In 50 years and 45 films, the great Sidney Lumet left us an astounding catalogue of cinematic brilliance, and I say that as somebody who's seen but nine of his movies. In those and those alone I've found a thousand times the talent of many of the currently hailed greatest directors in American cinema; Lumet's films varied significantly from one another in narrative and tonal ways, but the one constant throughout his work is his mastery of filmic craft. The man was a cinematic genius, simple as that. From the (literally) breath-taking tension of 12 Angry Men to the agonisingly difficult emotions of Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Lumet employed an unparalleled mastery of camera angles and movements to…

An almost entirely black cast star in a motown retelling of The Wizard of Oz. About as an insane a crapfest as you could ask for.

A painful pseudo-blackspoitation re-imagining of The Wizard of Oz. This film needs to be about 30 minutes shorter - the musical numbers just get tiresome.

Even though I was familiar with songs from the stage version, I had never actually watched the movie adaptation. It is awful...between Diana Ross looking like she's being stabbed or shrieking like a banshee, the bad wide angle shots showing off the lack of choreography, and the overall creepytown depiction of Oz.
But Ease on Down the Road is such a jam.

I was recently in the musical of this. This movie has no soul. I played my character better than the actor in this thing...even Michael Jackson sucks. The landscapes are confusing too, why were there cars in that one place again? Why?

The Motown version of the Wizard of Oz is possibly more entertaining than the original. Starring and featuring a soundtrack by Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Lena Horne, it's easy to see how this could be so.

I had seen this movie when I was younger and thought it was one odd film and it still is an odd film 30+ years latter. I don't think that it works as well as they would like it work for them because I looked it up on IMDB to see why Sidney would make this movie because most of his films are grounded in reality and this one is not and the reason why he was hired was because he is able to make films under budget and on time.
I am not a musical fan, but I have been watching more of them lately to see why that is for. I think that this film is okay and…
