Giving hope to bearded men everywhere that one day their Dad will give them a big goddamned hammer (cue up "If I had a hammer") and they'll be able to walk around saying things like "What ho?!" and "Wench bring me more mead, for my thirst needs sating" and "Whence ist thy comb, my beard doth need it".

(Film 34 of Toby's Attempt At The December Project)
This is probably my second favourite of the Marvel Universe movies (after The Avengers obviously), and it's easy to see why...unless you don't like it of course. The fight scenes are simply awesome, the effects/scenery are just brilliant - especially those used to create Asgard, and Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are great as Thor and Loki.
Also, Natalie Portman. Case closed.

Okay, so out of all the Marvel Phase One films, Avengers included, Thor is DEFINITELY my favorite. Sure, it's not as large-scale as The Avengers, but the beauty of this movie is that it doesn't NEED to be -- it succeeds tremendously with what it has. At the center of it all is a pitch-perfect performance by Chris Hemsworth, who brings Thor epically to life. The supporting cast all does solid work, too. Tom Hiddleston as Loki has certainly been…

After spending 8 hours trying to finish a 3-1/2 hour historical epic, I needed a quick fix of 100% pure mind numbing action, and Thor delivered. Sure, stuff happens too quickly. Thor comes to Earth for what seems like 10 minutes before he redeems himself and falls in love. Back home in what seems like another 10 minutes his brother goes all evil trying to destroy both Thor and an entire race on a different planet. But I never expect…

#4 in the Relatively Slow Avengers Marathon.
Whilst each of the Marvel films is its own beast, there’s something of a formula to them that’s always apparent, but even more so when watched in (Relatively Slow™) succession. Namely: There is action, there is comedy, there is a romantic subplot.
When this works, it works really well - see Iron Man, wherein a funny hero kicks ass and charms the lady out of Sliding Doors. When one aspect of the formula’s…

What took Thor from, let's face it, an average fantasy actioner and upped its game was not the set pieces in which the son of Odin and his companions battle Ice Giants and Destroyers, no.
What made the whole affair likeable was the sweet as a candied nut interplay between all main characters, and a sense of comic timing I certainly did not expect.
We've seen fish-out-of-water situations before, some good, some dire. Chris helmsworth takes his cocky thunder god…

Part of the:
Ultimate Marvel Movie Marathon
There really shouldn't be much doubt which movie best set up the success of the Avengers. Incredible Hulk was OK but ultimately was just a generic action monster movie. Iron Man introduced a wonderful character in Tony Stark and demonstrated great humour and action, but again, didn't really have too much to worry about, Captain America's job was a little trickier with it's mix of over the top fantasy elements and gritty war…
