"It's sunny in France/nothing else matters"
People yelling at each other. Glaring hypocrisies. Everyone's wrong - and yet everyone's right. While Tout va bien isn't the most enjoyable film in the world (and personally my least favorite of Godard's) it does contain some moments of sheer brilliance. Notably, the long tracking shot through the supermarket towards the end of the film is absolutely stunning. It's also quite important to recognize that although Godard himself does have some pretty strong leftist political views - this film doesn't come off as propaganda. The left isn't being seen through rose tinted glasses here.
"Many of Godard's films are either annoying or boring, but in every one of them, there are about 20 minutes of genius"
- cinematographer Raoul Coutard, on working with Jean-Luc GodardI might disagree with Mr. Coutard when it comes to films such as Breathless or Vivre sa vie, but for Tout va bien he is right on the money.

People shouting, and people shouting at each other. I quite liked the "we're making a film" bits, but the rest passed me by without saying hello.

Every time I watch a Jean-Luc Godard film I think "Hey, why don't I like him more?" Then after about 30 minutes I remember why. I like his anti-formulism approach at times and I thought the first handful of minutes of this was a lot of fun. He's basically throwing his hands up and saying "What am I doing?" Then once he decides what to do, it still feels like a random assortment of ideas and images. Some of those things are great like a man painting a wall blue and then painting over a painting on the wall. Yet this falls into my large pile of Godard films that don't gel together for me.
