Tromeo & Juliet
1997 Directed by Lloyd Kaufman
Synopsis
A modern, punk adaptation of Shakespeare's classic. Told irreverently, this film attempts to impact the viewer in the same way theatre-goers were effected in Shakespeare's time. Bawdy, Violent, Humorous, and Romantic.

Lloyd Kaufman is a fucking genius.

It is a right angled cosmos, and Juliet is it's sun! -
Better than Luhrman's adaptation, but has it's ups and downs.
-
Gratuitous sex, violence, body-piercings, incest and Shakespearean verse. Makes Baz Luhrmann look like an amateur.

This is one of those films that reminds you of why Troma are the b movie kings.

Funniest part is the end credits: Key Grip followed by Key Gripe and Key Grope; a list of actors not in the movie concluding with "And Daniel Day-Lewis as 'Gringo Ted'." Film itself revels in good-natured stupidity, which I gather is Troma's modus operandi (only other one I've seen is Pterodactyl Woman From Beverly Hills, which doesn't even appear on this Wiki-list); my sense of humor doesn't run terribly juvenile, so I indulged it more than enjoyed it. When I did laugh, it was usually at a pungent juxtaposition of Shakespearean verse and modern-day vernacular ("Parting is such sweet sorrow" "Totally sucks"), which you'd think there'd have been a lot more of. Cast is stronger than I'd expected, gross-outs…
