France, 1977: Women's Liberation is in the air.
A housewife takes over her husband's umbrella business after his illness.
"Excuse me, he can be brutal. He is a communist you see?"
This one has been on my shelf for soooo long. Finally watched it tonight.
Potiche is a political comedy set in 1977/78 France and starring two of that country's greatest exports Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu as former lovers, now a businessman's trophy wife (the Potiche of the title) and local communist mayor respectively. When Deneueve's husband's mismanagement forces his workers out on strike, she must mediate with Depardieu for a successful solution to please all and, in doing so, realises there is more to her than being a lady of leisure.
Directed by François Ozon from a play by Pierre Barillet and Jean-Pierre Grédy, Potiche, despite its…
A terrific cast, just not funny.
Film #17 of the Scavenger Hunt Challenge!
Task #7 : A film with a one word title!*
*The French title of this film is Potiche
Perhaps an exercise in unashamed nostalgia, this is nonetheless a charming vehicle for Catherine Deneuve, as the titular trophy wife or 'potiche' in a comedy with more to say than meets the eye.
The nostalgia element comes in the links to French cinema of the past, both in the pairing of Deneuve with Gerard Depardieu, having shared the screen many times before and the nods to one of Deneuve's most iconic roles, in the Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Here she is the wife of the CEO of the umbrella factory who takes over running the factory.…
François Ozon’s Potiche is a camp and frothy French farce about female empowerment in the late 1970s. Based on a play by Pierre Barillet and Jean-Pierre Grédy, the film centres on a trophy wife who takes over the family business when her husband is first held hostage by his employees and then falls ill. However, once in power she discovers she has an aptitude for business and for smoothing over the problems with the unions and workers.
Starring Catherine Deneuve as the feminist heroine the film is light and fluffy but not without its charms. Ozon has produced several screwball comedies with bright colours and camp characters before and Potiche follows this tradition. The film has a knowing wit with…
As with clothes in vintage shops which are actually newly-made, "vintage style" items, I often find new films set in the recent past a little false and disappointing. (“The recent past” in this context, for whatever reason, to me means the 1950′s onwards.) There is a bit of that excess shininess about this trophy but I loved its colourful cartoonish look typical of François Ozon's films. It’s more aesthetically satisfying than a British production which would try and make everything look grimy, when you really can’t replicate that older environment properly on modern film.
Visually, camp is the saving grace of Potiche; the actors deliver their lines in a slightly OTT manner which matches … but it’s the discordant…

In the late 70's Mrs. Pujol tries to be a good wife; her husband runs an umbrella factory and they have made a good life for themselves, though it appears her marriage is a little stale. When her daughter put into her mind that her life is dull, Mrs. Pujol looks for an opportunity to do something about it. At the factory strikes by the workers bring production to a halt and with her husband incapacitated, Mrs. Pujol sees a prime chance to take control and put a little female power in place.
This latest offering from Francois Ozon is a light and reasonably fluffy affair. The opening scene sees Mrs. Pujol ( a very good…
Potiche (François Ozon, 2010) 7/10
프랑수아 오종은 이래서 좋아!
François Ozon usually makes very interesting films. Potiche falls smack dab into that category, if only it had been funnier and not so slowly paced.
Catherine Deneuve is 'just a housewife' and kind of a doormat for her husband who runs the family umbrella factory. He ends up sick - during a strike and a consequent dispute with workers - and Deneuve is asked to take over. She does so excellently and really does not feel she should hand the reins back to her dominant misogynistic hubby.
It all seems like it could be an engrossing watch, but it really just turned out kind of a bore, sadly. A waste with all the talent involved.
pure fun and joy even when this film fails to keep the pace; it is a very well acted movie, CATHERINE DENEUVE [obviously and] specially.
Light yet very entertaining, could do with a slightly shorn running time but I was swept along.
Sometimes a bit too dumb and sometimes a bit too melodramatic, but still very entertaining.
This is now my favorite Ozon.
