Fascinating. I remember the trailer playing everywhere when this came out and getting completely sick of the sight of it. I was already sick of Paltrow but in the wake of Walk The Line I no longer cared about a movie starring Phoenix either. The advertising for this film took what was already overexposed and just beat me to death with it. It took five years and watching the rest of James Gray's work to feel like I might actually want to see this afterall.
A coming of age story of sorts, about a depressed guy who suddenly finds himself the subject of desire in one woman whilst obsessing over another. It is how he extracts himself from it that…

I almost turned this off at the very beginning because the opening dialogue was corny and I was worried there would be more of the same. I'm very glad I didn't because I really liked this film.
Jaoquin Phoenix is incredible, playing the role of depressed Leonard who has moved back home with his parents. He was so damn great and now I'm somehow MORE excited for The Master. The movie is about Leonard developing relationships with two women. It's pretty basic so I won't say too much about it.
While watching I would have bet money that the film was based on a play, but apparently not(it's loosely based on a Dostoyevsky short story, White Nights, which also inspired…

I'd seen this before and liked it a lot but I genuinely loved this the second time. I didn't think I could be more stoked for The Master but now after revisiting Joquin Phoenix's great performance I'd say The Master is my most anticipated film of 2012 along with Django Unchained. Maybe I'm crazy but this film oddly reminded me of Shame but with very different subject matter, although the vibes of both films are similar. Don't let the shitty poster art fool you, this is definitely worth checking out.

Joaquin Phoenix gives the best performance of his career (other than I'm Still Here but that doesn't really count).

Well-executed melodrama, but I couldn't get past the premise. Awkward 30-something year old guys who live with their parents don't generate this kind of attention from women as good looking as Paltrow and Shaw.

A romantic drama about a guy (Joaquin Phoenix) who moves back in with his parents after his relation ends. He is offered the opportunity to get romantically involved with the daughter of his father's business associate (if he buys into the relationship, it will further his father's business, and ultimately his own because he is set up to take over the business); he also meets a girl who has just moved into their appartment block (Gwyneth Paltrow); she represents wildness, amour fou if you like. He is then torn between the two.
I loved this movie. The story made a lot of sense, and the characters' feelings were real and heartfelt. The ending was not contrived but very sad and very plausible. I could easily identify with Joaquin's character and the choices and difficulties he faces. This is as good as you can expect a "serious" drame coming out of Hollywood to get.

I was really hesitant to give out another 5 stars (the second in a week, after 6 months without any) but this is an absolutely brilliant film, as raw and emotionally devastating as a romance can be, like a better (and more realistic and quirk-free) version of Silver Linings Playbook (which shouldn't be misconstrued for me, I liked that film very much) - what can happen when two damaged people meet, the interplay between relationships and mental illness and the choices we make (or are made for us) in terms of others.
It's not a showy film - it's technically very immaculately made and looks great, but not in a conspicuous or showy way, and despite the killer script (which…

simply an honest portrayal of a man who falls in love; this already very well written character is portrayed outstandingly by JOAQUIN PHOENIX.

James Gray's "Two Lovers" examines love in the mind and the heart. Phoenix's performance in the film is raw and wounded. To say that the man "acts" in the film is incorrect. He completely inhabits the role. His craft is invisible.
