Reviews of Ultraviolet 2006

Part of the December Project: Film #12
Oh Starz. The things you'll decide to start playing.
I really don't understand my relationship with Ultraviolet. It has some of the worst visuals, terrible action, the worst acting, and a near incomprehensible story. To boot, it's also dull as fucking shit.
And yet, this must be the 8th time I've watched it since I wasted money on it back when it first came out.
Why do I keep watching this? Am I…

"Hello. My name is Violet, and I was born in a world you may not understand." No shit Milla. No shit.
Now normally I lap this kind of shit up. A dystopic future through the eyes of a Jean-Paul Gaultier style artist, a la The Fifth Element. I usually like this particular aesthetic of art design and while I didn't like Equilibrium that much, I was kind of looking forward to what director Kurt Wimmer would bring us next. Well…

Ultraviolet had everything going for it, proven action-chick Milla Jovovich, an intriguing sci-fi premise, top notch promotional materials and a promising director Kurt Wimmer fresh off cult sucess on his previous film 'Equilibrium'
And yet many people, myself included, were disappointed. Except for some stand-out set pieces, the movie lacked seamless special effects and compelling character development to make the ending pay off.
I actually fell asleep in the theater, and thus I felt I owed it another look on…
-
Mila Jovovich looks amazing but the rest of the film is a mess.
-
Where do I begin? I love Milla Jovovich, and I love it when people try to make movies with a comic book style/asthetic. The rest of the movie? horrible! The dialogue is so terrible that I'm not convinced that this movie is in english, This movie is pointless, the villain(s) are pretty lame. Milla Jovovich and William Fichtner are the two good things about this movie. That being said, It's a solid midnight movie.
-
Very campy but very interesting use of computer graphics, not to the level of Sin City but still interesting. Milla has clearly established a niche in films as the heroine type – still can’t act a lick. Some very cool scenes in this movie as well as concepts about weapons and computer use.
-
Por qué Kurt Wiemmer, por qué?
-
Actually, despite my expectations and the casting of Mila as the (fetishistic) obvious sexy female lead this was an ok movie.
-
Eine schöne Dystopie mit leicht bekleideten Frauen, was will man mehr?
Außer ne aussagekräftige Story.
-
Astoundingly inept movie on all fronts.
-
I like the style and look to this movie. It's too bad that the editing, story and acting are crap.
I read that the director's cut is much better. Does anyone hear think its worth watching?
