Up the Creek
1984 Directed by Robert Butler
Synopsis
Who says a bunch of boobs can't win a race?
Bob McGraw is in his 12th year of college, goofing his way through life. Bob, Irwing, Gonzer and Max are the four losers forced and bribed to represent their university in an intercollegiate raft race. Forced and bribed into this role, they make some friends, the lovely Heather Merriweather, but mostly enemies, among others a whole team of marines, and preppy IVY-leaguers determined to win.

I used to see this VHS box when I was a kid and always wanted to rent it but my old man told me it was a "porno flick". Now almost 30 years later I finally got my hands on it. It's another kick at the can for two Animal House alumni, but it doesn't completely deliver what you want in an 80's sex comedy. Lots of craziness but not much debauchery. The best things about it are the Cheap Trick theme song and the dog actor. Not the best of the genre but there's a few laughs and lots of energy.

AIP “snobs vs. slobs” quickie is heavily indebted to films like Animal House, but it’s not a terrible example of the genre, as four frat house misfits enter a rafting contest in order to stay enrolled at school. There’s a wild anarchic tone to the piece that goes further than similar entries and results in a few chuckles, but no one would ever confuse this with a good film.

Inconsequential 80's boobs and rafts comedy that's very much a clone of something like Meatballs, perhaps. The Animal House style shenanigans are all fine at first but nothing really happens to improve on the formula and for T and A there's a good chunk of it missing for this to be anything but standard. Still, if only because it reminds you of other movies in the same vein, it's hard to not give Up the Creek a look see. Give it a few more stars if you're a 13 year old boy

Another 80s frat-comedy, this time focusing on a group of degenerates who must win a white-water raft race in order to receive diplomas. Tons of throwaway gags that don't stick, but there was something to say about the films energy. Coupled with a hilariously smart dog, this is worth a look for fans of the genre.

Never saw this as a kid and figured I'd give it a look. Cheap Trick does the theme song. That blonde chick from Charles In Charge who looks like Elisabeth Shue gets an "Introducing" credit despite the fact she'd been in a bunch of stuff before this movie.
Higgins from Magnum P.I. shows up in a cameo and hams it up. How is that guy not actually British? He's from Texas? What the hell?
Tim Matheson is like 40 and the fat guy from Animal House is eating a bologna sandwich & a sundae at the same time. That should tell you just about everything you need to know.
