John Carpenter's love for westerns is all over this film, and that is one of the reasons it is so much fun to watch. James Woods plays a terrific anti-hero, and his partnership with Daniel Baldwin works great. Both Baldwin and Woods seem to really enjoy spouting off their dialogue, and who can blame them with so many memorable lines to be had.
I really dig the vampire mythology presented in the film, and I really like all the catholic church stuff. The idea that the church would have hired teams of vampire killers is perfect.
Vampires is simply a great film to watch. The film is small, but extremely well realized. The gore effects are spectacular, with Mark Boone Junior's death being particularly memorable. Also, Frank Darabont shows up, so how could you not like that?

“I killed my own father, padre. I got no trouble killing you.”
-Jack Crow (James Woods)Whilst certainly not Carpenter’s worst, neither is it one of his better films. Vampires sits bang in the middle, and ‘run of the mill’ pretty much sums it all up. It’s nothing special, but it is surprisingly funny and a good watch.
The reason it works is because it’s often so over-the-top it’s borderline comedy, intentionally or not. Some of the deaths are just insane, whilst the long haired, vampire lord-man walks around soaking up bullets attempting to look cool and suave, with some silly husky voice. James Woods doesn’t even appear to be taking any of it seriously, but that’s okay, because… well… -

Daniel Baldwin, not be mistaken with Alec Baldwin, but damn those two look alike, brothers or not.
James Woods.. forcryingoutloudjustkillmenowPLEASE! Not a fan.
But it possesses same kind of awesomeness as From Dusk Till Dawn did. Needless to say that it can't compare in the acting department, the story's still pretty damn good. -
One of my favorite Carpenter films. James Woods is one badass motherfucker in this. This really is more of a western than a horror film.

This film should've been released ten or twenty years earlier, then it probably would've worked incredibly well. And John Carpenter is a very interesting director - is he an absolute genius or was he just a talented youngster? I'm truly starting to believe it's the latter. I haven't seen Prince of Darkness yet, but I think that movie will literally be the line in the sand between great films and lackluster ones.
James Woods and Greaser Baldwin are two McBadasses who hunt and kill vampires. When their gang of long-haired 90's c-actors are slain by a powerful Lead vampire, they have to muster up all their lamest insults to bring him to the grave. It seems they went for the…

Oh Sheryl Lee, how far you've fallen. You should have stuck with David Lynch.

Without James Woods this film would have been a solid 2 and a half stars.

Set back in time when vampires were still the bad guys. A good story with a strong cast and Carpenter direction. Woods, at his barely contained ferocious best, seems to really enjoy going nuts on anyone who questions his ideas – I get the impression that is what he is like in person – a real short person’s mentality – it's still very entertaining. Griffith is creepy as the head vampire and Baldwin a great partner.

See this not just cause its really fun, but James Woods owns in this. Lee is also a nice add and all the vampire stuff is really good.

Goofy fun, though very flawed. Enjoyable horror ride.

Saggy but fun vamp-flick with a fantastic James Woods performance from James Woods.

The opening scene is still just as fun and exciting as I remembered it, but the momentum dips some here and there. The over-the-top machismo and crassness don't really bother me here, and are good for a few laughs.
I will admit that the excellent poster art is one of the main things that made me want to revisit this one. Upon doing so, JC's score really shone as another star of the show. Good stuff throughout.
Also, Sheryl Lee's naked bootay.
