Part of Dastardly Difficult December: film nr.44
In and of itself, Vanilla Sky is a decent film. It is shot beautifully, has some great performances and uses popular music rather effectively (it is after all a Cameron Crowe film). It is refreshingly confusing for such a big production, which results in speculation while watching, which is always enjoyable and guarantees a certain level of involvement.
And to me it's also one of the most pointless remakes I've ever seen which made me constantly aware if how utterly fantastic Abre los Ojos was and how this comes across as part step by step remake, part distilled standardized Hollywood crowd pleaser.
Abre los Ojos is a deftly structured thriller, which is tense,…

Superb movie that makes you keep asking yourself:

My wife had never seen this so I gave it a rewatch with her. My feelings on it haven't changed much. I still think it's very underrated, and an entertaining film.

Say what you want about remaking films that don't need to be remade, I still love this version. Maybe the most diverse soundtrack ever that works completely on every level of a film.

A simultaneously dense and vapid film that roots around in a man's psychology without actually revealing much of anything about him.
I first saw this film shortly after its release on DVD back in 2001. I was 10 years old at the time, and it was like nothing I'd ever seen. There was this intense darkness and mystery, but there was also an unflappable lightness to the whole thing, and between these polar extremes I sat glued to the screen, watching it over and over along with a few other movies my grandmother had been given but hadn't wanted. The music, the visuals, the concept, and the cast blew my mind.
Of course, a lot of people don't like this film for one reason or another, but I have never disliked it, and even today it continues to baffle and delight me, making me doubt and question my own interpretations and change my theory every other viewing.

I think that the overall message of this film is that you shouldn't cheat on your girlfriend or else you will end up being hideous and no one will like you and you will have nightmares in your second life. I think. This film could have been amazing. At one point in the film I thought I was going to give this film a nice 4/5. But then something happened and turned it into something else. I am trying to not have spoilers in this review but it is really hard to get across what I mean without spoilers. Basically the film had a really good message about self image and how insecure we are when it comes to our…
