    Considering his already quite impressive oeuvre of two standout dramas inspired by a real-life tragedy, this one may not be Balaji Shaktivel's best, but certainly his most technically accomplished picture so far, even if he overdoes the stylistic flourishes at times for such a simple, if nonetheless gripping true-crime drama. The rather laborious flashback mystery narrative works for the most part, but is not the real draw here. As with his moving and tender investigations into youth, love and suffering, Kaadhal (2004) and Kalloori (2007), the cinema of Shaktivel engages here once again with its likeable, remarkably well-drawn characters (the two leads are perfectly cast to convey a lot with subtle looks and little gestures), the gritty portrayal of the…
