Not a patch on some other movies about Vietnam (Platoon springs to mind) as it feels the urge to go the WW2 route and make it about freedoms, honour and a love of your country. I did expect it, after the first 10 minutes, to be all flag-waving patriotism and chanting of "USA" but it calms down into a more even handed account. Based more on tactics and tragedy it makes for an interesting blend. Mel Gibson towers over everyone else, bar Sam Elliot (who is awesome). It does delve into patriotism a little too often but even Saving Private Ryan did that. If a country that fought a war makes a movie about that war then chances are it'll…

I'm sorry, couldn't take this overly patriotic attempt at glorifying the Vietnam war and the Americans who fought in it. Stopped watching after 35 minutes.

Based off an actual book by Lt. Hal Moore, We were Soldiers is a great recreation of the early days of Vietnam, when American troops were first doing tours of duty. Pinned down in harsh onslaughts of Vietcong attacks, and without proper weaponry or support, the movie goes to show how unprepared US troops first were for the conflicts that would drag on for more than a Decade. Like the book, the movie is very high on the gore side, seeing many men gunned down or bleeding out on their way back to Hospital tents, so it is not for the weakhearted. The movie is less of a light-easygoing "Murrica" kind of inspirational films, and more of a Horrors of war kind of film, kind of like Apocalypse Now

We Were Soldiers is quite possibly the best Vietnam war film since Platoon. Based on Colonel Harold Moore's, We Were Soldiers Once... And Young. We Were Soldiers tells a compelling story about the first major engagement during the Vietnam war. Braveheart screenwriter, Randall Wallace directs this film with great accuracy. The film is not flawless, but for the most part, it does a great job at being authentic. The film does a great job at establishing the characters, unlike previous war films where you are shown little character development, We Were Soldiers demonstrates perfect character development and you sympathize when one of the characters are killed in combat. I found We Were Soldier to be very different than any other…

Despite the initiative of Randall Wallace trying not to be partial, he couldnt resist to all the american cliches that all of us were used to know well. But there are some scenes that can be hel on our minds like whent the firt tenest died and his eyes come from life to death filling with black! Nice scene!

I can't be the only sucker for Mel Gibson melodrama.

Simply put one of the best war movies I have ever seen. Many won't give it a chance cause of the current Mel Gibson hate, which started around the time this came out, and that is a total shame.
The war scenes are amazing. It takes place at the beginning of the Vietnam War, so the sense of dread was not there yet for America about this war. The battle scenes are staged perfectly, and as each platoon begins to get surrounded and out numbered, they film it like you can feel how bad it actually was.
The score is it's own character in this film, as it is simply awesome.
And the cast. Gibson is great, but some of…

Filled with every cliche in the book, We Were Soldiers still manages to succeed by maintaining the a focus on the humanity on both sides even during the most violent action this side of Saving Private Ryan.
