W.E. need to talk about Madonna...
With all the style of a pharmacy and all the substance of a pancake, her exercise in gruelling, vapid storytelling might as well have been titled The Moronarchy. Yes, that was a bad joke, but the fact that this was green-lit was a worse one. Watch alongside Visconti's The Leopard to see how far historical epics about monarchies have come in fifty long years. At the hands of a misguided singer who hasn't had a good song since Ray of Light, the answer is evidently not very far at all.

Madonna's first attempt behind the lens on a feature film culminates in something utterly woeful. From start to finish, this is a monotonal, flaccid film that is only accentuated by an utterly degrading human perspective.
Even if we are to simply ignore the amateur nature of the cinematography, allowing a debut director to be let off the hook, then we are still bombarded with questionable material throughout. This is primarily the story of modern day Wallis, looking back, through decidedly dodgy flashback cuts, into the lives of Wallis and Edward, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Perhaps it would be wise, therefore, to consider the problematic nature of a woman obsessed and at the point of schizophrenia before you blatantly…

Without doubt the most wretched example of cinematic bilge on offer this year—and no doubt many many years either side too—Madonna’s W.E. is a disgusting show of frivolous vapidity, a moneyed monstrosity that beckons contempt for both its characters and its creators. Parallel storylines tell the not dissimilar stories of Wallis Simpson—the American divorcee who led King Edward VIII to abandon his throne—and Wally Winthrop—a privileged New Yorker obsessed with Wallis’ life, and distressed by her own husband’s undisguised adultery. The potential for engagement is rife in this story of forbidden love, but Wallis’ frustration at being banished from upper class society and forced to speak to “common people”…

Madonna’s track record as an actress is less than stellar but I was still curious to see how she would fare behind the camera. Sometimes curiosity isn’t a good thing though as I’d rather sit through Body of Evidence on 24-hour repeat than have to endure this insufferable excuse for a film again.
The story of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson is one deserving to be told, particularly because so much of it is shrouded in secrecy and distorted by rumour. However, Madonna is not the woman to tell this story based on the sorry results here. I don’t know if it is because she is so desperate to be taken seriously as a filmmaker or if it is just…

Well I will say this that Madonna's film is not as bad as the critics make it out to be but I could actually see this from the trailer alone and that is why I did not mind watching it. It is probably true that just because Madonna was attached to the film that it was already going to receive negative publicity due to the fact that she has not had any success with her experiments in film from music. W.E. also being only her 2nd self directed film, she will also appear before critics and film aficionados as amateur at best.
However I will say that is not entirely true with W.E. as even though I will say this…

I was very impressed with this. The film ties the past and present together in a compelling and interesting way. You might not get a lot out of this movie educationally, but you will enjoy it.

Even Madonna can't squelch the greatness of Andrea Riseborough (and Abbie Cornish and Oscar Isaac).

I know a lot of bad reviews for this film stem from one thing: the hate for anything in film to do with Madonna. Well, I've liked her in everything I've seen her in, minus that Bond movie. In this film she serves as writer/director.
Okay, the film looks fantastic. The sets, the costumes, the scope: it all looks really good. The score is very powerful and probably the best thing in the film.
The acting is good, especially from the leads Riseborough and Cornish. Even thought she only had a few scenes, I loved Dormer too.
That said, the movie is BORING!!!!! One story is about a bit of a slut having a King fall in love with her,…

Γυναικεία υπόθεση.

I really tried to forget that that awful woman directed this rubbish, but it's impossible. Her mucky paw-prints are all over it. It's a self-indulgent mulligatawny soup of a movie that has the pacing of a comatose snail. The most unforgivable moment is that, 47 minutes in, she obviously realised that what she was making was a yawn marathon and threw in a token tantrum, but that goes nowhere near to solving the mountain of problems involved.
Almost as bad as Swept Away!

Came in knowing nothing about this film and enjoyed what I saw. Good acting performances, a good story, interesting cinematography, blah blah blah.
