Finally, there comes a horror/thriller where the ending isn't written all over it from the start.
Okay, we know from the opening there's something dodgy about Ford's character (brilliant performance, by the way) but apart from that it's pretty well written and keeps us guessing until the twist at the end.
A rather enjoyable, if bumpy ride that I still relish pulling off the shelf every couple of years.

Not exactly sure why I didn't get around to watching this earlier as I rate Zemeckis very highly and most things with Ford in them I find at the very least fairly entertaining. Yet somehow this eluded my radar.
As it turns out this isn't a great film. Certainly not among the best of Zemeckis or Ford. I got the distinct feeling this was a film people made for the wrong reasons and damn near worked despite that. Ford probably thought Zemeckis could do no wrong and Zemeckis probably liked that he could work with Ford. Pfeiffer knew that she wasn't an A-listed star and the opportunity to work with such big names was too big to say no. While…

Tedious and predictable. Stellar cast, though - Michelle Pfeiffer just has the best face.

There's really not much to say about What Lies Beneath. It's a very thin, predictable straight-to-video thriller story that somehow managed to score two A-List stars and an A-List director to all sleepwalk their way through it. Somehow stretched out to a bum-numbing 130 minutes (!), this is like paying for a six-course meal that's served leisurely on newly polished silver platters, yet each course is just a lump of reheated tripe.

Sadly it's got some great acting and a fairly good plot but it is spoiled by a kind of ridiculous ending; the supernatural elements are fine, almost more believable.

What Lies Beneath? Sadly nothing worth watching, this is a thriller that you won't believe in and which you'll probably find quite boring. Not worth wasting time on.

Not bad all at. Gave me the willies in places. Found the plot to be a little messy in places but overall not bad.

Zemeckis' attempt to channel Hitchcock is only somewhat successful. Takes a real long time to really go anywhere.

So predictable I wanted to cry. But it was a well-executed predictability. It kept my attention, and that's all you can really ask for, right?

A subtle horror movie by Robert Zemeckis, I'm thrilled. And a good one it is!
Not using much jump scares (let alone gore) this one builds up a great atmosphere.
It gave itself away too soon, though.
You can watch this one with those who usually don't watch horror movies, they'll be scared but not traumatized.
