Reviews of When Harry Met Sally... 1989

It's a new year, movie lovers, and in this episode, we take on an incredible film with crisp, spot-on, endlessly quotable dialogue, a cast that is absolutely perfect, and not one but two fantastic New Year's Eve scenes. That's right, we're talking about Rob Reiner's 1989 romantic comedy classic When Harry Met Sally.... We talk about how the film sprang from the real lives of Rob Reiner, his producing partner Andrew Scheinman and the Oscar-nominated writer Nora Ephron. We discuss…

Last night, for the most part, I watched When Harry Met Sally again. I cannot count how many times I have watched this film. It is a favourite film of mine and a film I use to demonstrate the validity of the romantic comedy genre. This is a genre film to its core and it plays on the established conventions of romantic comedy with incredible skill. Romantic comedy is a genre with heart, and although this has changed significantly as…

Only in the 1980s could someone who looks like Billy Crystal be a romantic leading man in a film. But he's great here, and has real chemistry with an extremely sweet Meg Ryan. More importantly, the writing of the film lets us get to know two very real people, who actually grow over the course of just 90 minutes. Harry is a dick at the start, and yet he becomes a sympathetic figure. And it's a lot of fun -…

A very funny, touching film and a rom-com that I actually enjoyed. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are so funny in their roles and the whole thing just comes across as so real and honest, it's like they're real people who have continuously crossed paths, struck up a friendship and fallen in love. It's a really great film, which is no surprise as it's directed by Rob Reiner, the man who gave us Stand By Me, my all time favourite film.
Also, Meg Ryan has incredible eyes. I just have to say that.

A really great romantic comedy that's not just some throwaway, sappy date movie. This film has something to say and it's entertaining while it says it. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are both so incredible in their roles that it's pretty much impossible to imagine anyone else playing these characters. When Harry Met Sally is one of those "perfect time and place" movies that has inspired every film of the same genre in one way or another ever since it…

Watching a film as sweet and funny as When Harry Met Sally makes me wonder what exactly happened to Rob Reiner and Meg Ryan, but more importantly it makes me wonder what on earth happened with the Rom-Com genre. I think most people will agree with me when I say it's the worst-served of them all by the soulless machinery that is Hollywood, so when I catch up on what is said to be one of the last great ones…

Probably the most original rom-com I've seen despite how influential it is. The opening is brilliant, the middle is brilliant, the end is brilliant. Meg Ryan is also brilliant.

I have never seen When Harry Met Sally... before, but I'm glad I finally checked it out tonight. I was particularly impressed with Meg Ryan. There's nothing wrong with her as an actress, but I've never been the biggest fan. However, she was charming as hell in this film and certainly won me over. (Now if only they could've worked a few scenes from In the Cut in there - specifically with how great she looked in 1989 - this…
