Reviews of When Harry Met Sally... 1989

Watching a film as sweet and funny as When Harry Met Sally makes me wonder what exactly happened to Rob Reiner and Meg Ryan, but more importantly it makes me wonder what on earth happened with the Rom-Com genre. I think most people will agree with me when I say it's the worst-served of them all by the soulless machinery that is Hollywood, so when I catch up on what is said to be one of the last great ones…

Someone finally pulled it off. Rob Reiner made a Woody Allen film that is missing all of the things that people typically hate about Woody Allen films. As it turns out, most of the what he left out wasn't all that necessary.
I can't think of a single scene I would remove or alter in any way. The writing is effortless and real; truly masterful. What you get with When Harry Met Sally is an unassuming little film that does…

Still as witty and charming as the first time I saw it, and deserves to always be placed among the essential, top rung romantic comedies. Both Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan have had respectable careers, but their performances as Harry and Sally are arguably ones they never quite matched.
Chemistry is off the charts. Stellar supporting work from Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby. Ended an incredible decade for Rob Reiner, whose work has progressively gotten worse since. Everyone involved was at the height of their talents, and the end result is evidence of that. A near-perfect classic.

Part of My Favorite Movies Ever, Ever, Ever.
Part of 2013: The Year of Inspiration.Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.”
The first time I watched When Harry Met Sally..., it was because it was Mother's Day and it was my mom's favorite movie, so I decided to watch it with her. I'd never been into romantic movies, but there was something about this one that…

"I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible" - Harry Burns
Is there a better romantic comedy out there ? I really doubt it. Meg Ryan & Billy Crystal were absolutely wonderful.

My 400th Letterbox review!!!!!
A classic! One of the greatest-funniest Romantic Comedies ever made.
My favorite of Nora Ephron's scripts. Very insightful dialogue-great characters-likable characters-relatable characters. I believe the actors and the direction of Rob Reiner made the comedy work but Ephron laid all the ground work and what I love about this script is that a lot of the humor takes me by surprise-whether it's a quick witty line from Crystal or the scene where Carrie Fisher & Bruno Kirby…

Even if Billy Crystal's voice drives you insane, even if Meg Ryan makes you want to puke, even if you watch it on a plane and fall asleep for the middle coda, even if your heart is made of blackest stone, even if BC makes for the world's least convincing college student, even if you LOVE wagon-wheel coffee tables beyond all else, even if you're a manly man and you think this is a film for girls, even if you're…

You realize of course that we could never be friends.
-Harry BurnsIt's the measuring stick for all romantic comedies. I didn't use the abbreviated term rom-com, because that reminds me of tired overused elements that aren't part of this film. In fact is there a genre in film that uses a formula more then romantic comedies? That is one of the main reasons When Harry Met Sally has stood the test of time. In a genre that is completely…

About as close to perfect as the genre can get. The dialogue is witty, clever and honest, the chemistry between Billy and Meg is totally believable, as is the development of their relationship. The film also avoids crass humour, bad language or resorting to slapstick for laughs. The perfect date movie.
