I’m not sure exactly when time ran out, but the money appears to have run out when the ragbag group of volcanic refugees comes to a ten metre bridge which traverses a river of lava. It takes 20 minutes of movie time to get across the bridge – the climatic set piece. And the demise of the Hotel is accomplished with a weak, two-second animation. This might have been forgivable with a decent script, but the dialogue and characterisations are as bad as the effects. Irwin Allan’s most lacklustre disaster film.
What is Paul Newman doing in this, one of the last dreadful dregs of the 70's disaster movie genre? He rocked The Towering Inferno and should have know better...
