This indie film was Drew Barrymore's first film as director. It didn't show . Barrymore has obviously learned a lot from working under a slew of famous directors and her comic touch has rarely been better.
Bohemian indie chick of late,Ellen Page gives it her all in a drama/comedy about of all things, Roller Derbys. Backed by a strong cast of female comedy titans including Kirsten Wiig and Barrymore herself, this is one of those films that just makes you smile. From the ludicrously named stars of the Roller Derby,to Page's pageant obsessed mother played by Marcia Gay Harden this is a touching and often very funny film. Page is surrounded by strong character women ,with both Juliette Lewis and Zoe… -
This review reportedly contains spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Aw, man, this makes me miss doing much in the way of sports, and wish I could have a go at roller derby, even more than when I read friends' posts about it.
Whip It has the predictable structure of the "misfit rebel finds somewhere to fit" type of teen film, but the specifics are different enough to make it enjoyable, and the match scenes can be exhilarating as an action movie.
This is a great ensemble cast of strong characters, though the reviewer who commented on their fairly conventional looks is right. The bunch of girls who burst in to the shop near the start of the film, some with plentiful facial piercings and some pretty large, were more…

Who'd a knew Drew had it in her!
Ellen Page is my "if I was into girls" crush.

Drew Barrymore's directorial début is a surprising film. Its message of "be your own hero"/"go your own way" isn't particularly original, nor are a couple of the plot elements, or the slightly annoying protagonist which could have been lifted from any other teen drama.
Roller Derby isn't a sport that many people will be familiar with, but Barrymore uses that to her advantage, by creating a world of violence, rebellion and female empowerment. The skating scenes are fun, messy and violent and the script is funny, if a little hackneyed in places.
This world is filled with the better of the supporting characters, notably the excellent Maggie Mayhem played by Kristen Wiig and Andrew Wilson, playing the exasperated Roller Derby…
-
Suprising piece from Drew Barrymore, who is also acting in the movie. Funny, colorful, vivid, heart-warming, civilising. Gives a good picture of a quite unknown sport. Good film to spend the evening, especially in a good company.

A lot better than I expected.

It's a bit rubbish but I could watch Drew Barrymore and Kristen Wiig on roller skates until I had nothing left in me.

Love the irony of a violent female sport with no sore losers

I love this film despite the constant annoyance that is Ellen Page, Barrymore does a fine job!

Pretty rad.

I liked it, okay?
