In this prequel to Jane Eyre, Edward Rochester finds himself in Jamaica looking to make his fortune. As the second son, the expectation is that his brother will inherit the family estate and so his future must lie elsewhere. He soon meets Antoinette Cosway and is offered a substantial dowry to marry her. Only after the wedding does he learn of her family history, including the madness that afflicted her mother. Just stunning. The theme of dreams that runs throughout the story is perfectly illustrated with soft, hazy visuals and the paranoia of the latter half is brilliantly supported by the intense soundtrack. Both of the leads performances were pitch perfect, so much so that the other characters seemed a mere annoyance.
This is a brilliantly visceral romance, in fact, I'd even say that the chemistry between Rebecca Hall and Rafe Spall is so compelling that this is one of the most affecting love stories I've seen. I'd strongly recommend it for fans of period pieces - provided they don't require a happy ending!

Steamy drama based on Jean Rhys' story of colonial romance in the Caribbean. Rafe Spall makes for a rotten cad as Rochester but Rebecca Hall is too lightweight. Read the book.
