The mise-en-scène is perfect. Too accurate rural meth country. Strong start to Lawrence's career.

The mood of this movie and Jennifer Lawrence's character felt like a preamble to The Hunger Games. Melancholy. With a surprise streak of horrible darkness. Cried at the end, with the little girl and the banjo.

Kind of like a southern gothic/grit-lit novel except made for people who've never read one before. If you're into the genre, everything that plays out is a bit obvious. It feels sometimes that there are a few more plot wrinkles that could have been included or maybe it could have gone full bore grit-lit and really upped some of the more grotesque elements. JLaw teaching the kids to shoot was kind of too on-the-nose, though her performance is good. But Hawkes steals the show here as Teardrop. We needed more of him.
